Auto-resize of images - far too big!

I seem to recall that the default size for an auto-resized piccie is about 1024 pixels across the top edge.

That's bigger than my monitor display, and calls for undue scrolling. 500-600 pixels would be alarge enough, surely?

This site gives some helpful statistics regarding the trend in display sizes:

While 800x600 is still the standard by which we design the majority of the site, we feel that the majority of users are now operating using display resolutions that make 500 to 600 pixel wide images too small.

When designing for an 800 pixel desktop, we have to give some room for the vertical scrollbar and other browser window elements, which leaves room for about 760 pixels. On an 1600x1200 display, as I use, a 760 pixel image doesn't even fill half the screen.

When we added the auto-resize feature we chose a resolution which will work well for most users and which conforms to the expectations we have for the future.

That's a very informative site! Did you notice this sentence?

"Web developers be aware: Many users still have only 800x600 display screens."

I rest my case.........
