Ultimate Ball Bearing Dc Head For Only $10 !!!

believe I have found an ultimate ball bearing DC head for only $10! It is simple, elegant with bearings and built in horn for roll control. All parts are off the shelf and more important, they are low cost! The head is based on nylon Traxxas Steering Block. You can get more fancy aluminum steering block but they are expensive.

This can be used with traditional autogyro pylon or stick mount type. I have posted many pics so it should be self explanatory. This DC head with 4mm bolt fits perfectly to the Autogyro Co. of Arizona’s fiberglass head. It will also work very well with tradition sandwiched wooden and polypropylene type head.

The 4mm bolt is little sloppy in the bearings. Apply thin tape on the bolt before sliding it in and this should take the slop out. The bolt has a little radius so it will contact the inner race on the bottom bearing. On top, use must use a small collar that is drilled out for 4mm bolt so it only contacts the inner race and does not rub the outer race. Once the bolt is in place, slide the collar over on top and snug up the setscrew. Feel the shaft and make sure it is spins free then tighten the set screw.

The king pin, used for hinge and pitch control, is little loose so I opted to use a drill rod which I got from McMaster Carr for $1.49 for 36” length! On McMaster Carr website, enter “steel rod” and press Find. Select “Rods and Discs”. Under Diameter, select .101”. Select “Grade O-1 Oil-Hardening Steel”. The W-1 cost $0.50 more. These are soft rods which are fine for control hinge.

Parts List.

1. Steering Block: Traxxas #3636 $2.89

2. 4x8mm Flanged Ball Bearings: Duratrax DTXC1517 $4.99

3. King Pins: Traxxas #3740 $2.39

Drill Rod Option: $1.49

4. 4x36mm button head bolt

5. 9/32 O.D. collar drilled out to 4mm

6. Two 4mm locking nuts

7. Two 4mm washer.

For stick mounts, you will need following parts:

U-Joint: Traxxas U-Joints wScrews $4.79
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJD72&P=7

Dubro Horn Bracket 557 4-40: $1.20

Cut the side of the nylon on the U-Joint and remove the steel portion. The half of U-Joint will not fit a 1/4 dowel rod or carbon fiber or where ever stick mount you want to use. Just epoxy it in. You will have to make a “C” out of 1/4" plywood. The Du-Bro horn brackets are mounted using 2-56 hardware. The U-Joint dowel mount is also fastened using 2-56 hardware. The steering block has little offset for the pivot point. Because the Du-Bro horn brackets are mounted on side of the “C”, the main rotor shaft will be right in the center.

I am building a small electric and a .25 size autogyro and both will use this head design. I tested this design on my small Minnie and it works great!!!

I can appreciate the thought that has gone into your design . Nice to see the gears are still turning and good luck with the rest of the project.

Two questions.

1. What is a ".25" sized autogyro?

2. Would work on the Whippet I need to start building? It looks simple and rugged.

Any guesses?

.25.... is in reference to an .25 cubic inch I.C. {internal combustion} motor.

Wahid,

Might want to update the links in your original post, they don't seem to work now.

Oddly enough, when I search the Tower site for the parts I get the same basic link with 'www3' instead of 'www2'. These innernets be a hard mistress.
