Phoenix maidens

A friend and I finally flew our Phoenix rcrg's this weekend- 3 years and 3 days after starting construction.

Here's mine:
KJ 1st flight JF.MOV (0 min 48 sec)

Here's his:
JF 1st Flight.MOV (1 min 6 sec)

We both cartwheeled the landing. I flew mine 3 more times after a quick repair to get the trims worked out. His went back in to the hangar to fix the tail feathers.

That' looked like a pretty stiff wind for a maiden, you did ok. What motor were you boosting on?

The wind sounded worse than it was. We couldn't quite set the launcher straight into the wind due to some spectators that set up camp that way, so I dealt with a bit of a cross wind.

F13's for those flights. I ended up flying 1 more F13 and then 2 G12 boosts.

Here's a photo from this past weekend's flying session. This boost was on the F23SK reload.

Here are my two latest full fuse designs. Both are designed from scratch. They are structurally very similar but are not identical, the Buran has slight wing/tail/rear end and trim differences. The Buran started out as an X-37 that showed some wierd tail control issues and I scrapped it, and converted it into the Buran. They both are similar in flight performance, and in fact the radio settings are identical for boost and glide trim. Shuttle weighs 13.5 oz rtf and the Buran 13 rtf. I have not painted the bottom/rear ends yet, as it is cold in the garage

I got the shuttle nose a bit too pointy and the buran a little too blunt, but I'm still playing around with curving the foam and at some point I want to just glue the damn thing together and fly it......

Just bare depron, sharpie for the fine lines, trim monokote self adhesive for all other markings, just cut and applied.

24mm mount for E motors, both elevon control only.

KJ Nice Build, Bird, Boost, and Bic......errrrr/.... ment.... Pic!

I have a new kit I would like to build someday. I am sure it will come out much lighter than my current flying ATP.

Liftoff and landing photos

Flew some more X-15 flights today, tried an E-11 and an F-12 24mm reload, the F-12 was starting to get pretty fast for this light weight, I think that's a good upper limit.

I was trying to land right next to the photographer, but both times I managed to get him inbetween the launch smoke and the plane....
