Introduction

GRADUATE “TOPGUN” WITH FLYING COLORS

With the E-flite® F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) jet, more pilots can enjoy flying a replica of the iconic fighter than ever before! Developed for the U.S. Navy, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat made its first deployment in 1974 aboard the USS Enterprise, replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. This E-flite model is based on the F-14D Super Tomcat variant and the factory-applied finish pays homage to Strike Fighter Squadron 2 (VFA-2), also known as the famous “Bounty Hunters”. During its 2002-2003 deployment — the final cruise with the Tomcat — VF-2 participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom flying reconnaissance, close air support, CAP and strike missions. The F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF recreates the VF-2 fighter down to the functional variable-sweep wings and full-flying stabs to deliver an authentic and unique flying experience. It’s scaled to be practical for more pilots to fly and afford because it’s compatible with popular 4S 2200mAh batteries. Plus it’s equipped with exclusive AS3X® and optional-use SAFE® Select technologies — making it easier to fly than any other TOPGUN Tomcat EDF model yet!

Overview

THE MOST PRACTICAL F-14 EDF YET

Many RC pilots have dreamed of flying an F-14 one day — and the E-flite® F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF makes that dream a reality! It arrives fully-assembled and nearly ready to fly right out of the box including a factory-installed receiver with exclusive Spektrum™ AS3X® and optional-use SAFE® Select technologies. It’s ready to bind to your 6+ channel DSMX®/DMS2® equipped computer transmitter, plus you’ll receive real-time telemetry data including battery voltage, current, motor RPM and more via compatible Spektrum AirWare™ equipped radios. Full-flying stabs and functional 3-position variable-sweep wings deliver an incomparable flying experience you can’t get anywhere else. The fully-molded EPO airframe is durable, lightweight, and factory-finished to pay tribute to the U.S. Navy’s VF-2 “Bounty Hunters” squadron. The fixed landing gear plus steerable nose wheel makes it easy to taxi, takeoff and land on smooth surfaces — or remove the landing gear for more speed and vertical performance when hand launching over and landing on grass. With the F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF you’re closer to being a TOPGUN than ever before!

Bind-N-Fly® Completion Level Advantage Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly® (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum™ 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly, and fly!

Exclusive Technologies This is the first F-14 Tomcat model equipped with exclusive Spektrum™ AS3X® and SAFE® Select technologies. AS3X works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence to deliver a locked-in feel that makes it seem like you're flying a much larger airplane. Optional-use SAFE Select offers pitch and bank angle limits along with automatic self-leveling that can be turned on and off at the flip of a switch to make this an easier to fly Tomcat!

Telemetry Capability The F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF is equipped with a control unit including a receiver and ESCs that provide a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data including motor RPM, current, battery voltage and more to compatible Spektrum™ AirWare™ equipped transmitters (including the DX6e and 8e, DX6 G2/3 and 8 G2, the DX9, NX6, 8 and 10, iX12™, iX20™ and others) while you fly.

High Power EDFs The factory-installed brushless power systems feature 40mm fans with high RPM outrunner motors. This twin power system setup is designed to deliver excellent performance with popular 4S 2200mAh 30+C batteries.

Functional Features The full-flying stabs offer crisp and precise taileron control, and along with the functional 3-position variable sweep wings, deliver an authentic and unique F-14 flying experience.

Gear Options You can use the included fixed landing gear with steerable nose wheel to taxi, take off and land on smooth surfaces. Or you can leave the landing gear off for more speed and vertical performance when hand launching over and landing on grass.

Durable Design Construction with fully molded EPO material makes it possible to replicate complex details and shapes in a lightweight yet durable form. The result is an outstanding scale appearance that's easy to maintain and delivers the best possible flight experience.

Fully Factory-Assembled The F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF arrives 100% factory-assembled and nearly ready to fly right out of the box! It’s equipped with industry-leading Spektrum™ 2.4GHz technology that binds to your 6+ channel DSMX®/DSM2® equipped computer transmitter.

Unique Trim Scheme The factory-applied paint and decal finish pays tribute to the U.S. Navy’s VF-2 “Bounty Hunters” squadron so you’ll be proud to show off your model everywhere you go.

Bind-N-Fly® Completion Level Advantage Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly and fly!

This Bind-N-Fly Basic model is equipped with a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMX® receiver featuring AS3X® (Artificial Stabilization–3-aXis) technology that works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence so you enjoy a sense of stability and precision that makes it feel like you're flying a much larger, expertly tuned aircraft.

If this is your first model of its type, or you want an extra margin of safety while familiarizing yourself with the airplane, you can enable the optional-use SAFE® Select flight envelope protection technology built into the receiver. No programming is required.

With SAFE Select enabled, you get:

Pitch and Bank Angle Limits • These envelope limits keep the airplane from rolling or pitching upside down. They also prevent excessive climb or dive angles.

Automatic Self-Leveling • The airplane instantly returns to and holds level flight when the sticks are released and in the center position. It’s also helpful for keeping the wings level during takeoffs/launches and landings.

Easy Switch Assignment—No Complex Programming Required • The simple procedure for assigning a transmitter switch to turn SAFE Select features on and off doesn't require any complex programming and takes just a few seconds.

E-flite F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF Bind-N-Fly Basic (3 min 44 sec)

Some additional notes:
  • Pre-orders are being accepted now...but these will not be in stock and shipping until May of 2022. The reason we’re announcing it so early is because it’s in RealFlight 9.5S that was also announced today (see the thread for that here: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...-%28S-Steam%29). Which means if you have RF9 or RF9.5 and take advantage of the FREE update to get RF9.5S, or buy RF9.5S (which releases on 12/8/21), you'll be able to fly the F-14 on RealFlight before you can buy it! And FWIW, the Top Gun 2 movie is currently scheduled for release on May 27th, 2022

  • Price...oftentimes a sensitive subject Labor, component and especially shipping costs have gone up many times over the last few years -- and especially the last 6 months -- so unfortunately the price is higher now than we originally targeted when we started the project almost three years ago. The F-14 Tomcat Twin 40mm EDF is only available in a BNF Basic version (because the control unit includes a Spektrum receiver along with the two ESCs) and the price as of today is $299.99.

  • Spektrum 4S 2200mAh 30C G1 and G2 Smart batteries work great and deliver flight times upwards of 4-6 minutes depending on throttle management/flying style. Longer 2200mAh batteries also fit, so batteries like the Smart 50C and 100C packs can be used to deliver a bit more performance (and run cooler)…but are NOT required to get great performance overall! Some other brands of larger/heavier 2200s might not fit and work, but we don’t recommend those of course

  • Level flight top speed is around 80 MPH, and it’s usually a bit faster when the wings are swept fully. We’ve even hit well over 100 MPH in a dive…it’s plenty fast enough for its size, and if it was any faster, you’d probably just lose orientation that much easier! It’s larger than a UMX of course, but with the wings fully swept (especially with the gear removed) it can be somewhat easy to lose orientation…SAFE Select has saved many F-14s so far and will continue to do so in the future BTW, because of the speed and orientation considerations, we only recommend flying this at a typical RC flying or similar sized field. We do NOT recommend flying it at parks, soccer fields, etc!

  • The F-14 is not particularly hard to fly, but it is “different” to fly. And because of the functional swing wings, the size, orientation considerations, etc. even though it’s equipped with SAFE Select we say it’s a “Skill Level 3 = Experience Required” model. Some of that experience should include being able to take off, fly and land high-performance EDF models like the Viper 70mm, F-16 70mm or any of our 80+mm models without any issues. It is NOT a good first EDF or second EDF model – and maybe not even a good third EDF model – for most pilots. We know a lot of people who don’t have the necessary skills will still buy and possibly crash it…which we can’t prevent, but we can at least make them aware before they do (so if things go wrong they -- hopefully, though not likely -- don’t blame the model)!

  • You need a minimum of a 6-channel transmitter to fly it because SAFE Select is on channel 5 and the variable sweep wings are on channel 6. You also need to use a COMPUTER transmitter (e.g. a DXS won’t work even though it’s 7-channels) to program “Flight Modes” because it will require slightly different trim when flying with the wings in each of the 3 positions. All of our Spektrum transmitters from the DX6e to the iX20 have Flight Mode programming and the addendum/manual covers how to program them accordingly, plus we’ll have preset transmitter files and we’ll also be making some videos that explain/show how to do it.

  • Since it’s almost 6 months () between announcement and release we’re planning to release at least one video per month! So if you haven't already, be sure to subscribe to this thread AND to our YouTube channel to get alerted as soon as a new video is posted:

I am beyond excited for this one! I have been dreaming for years for a Tomcat that was a good fit for me. From what is written above, I think this is going to be it! I haven't been this excited for a RC plane in a long time, probably because my all time favorite aircraft is the F-14 Tomcat.

Ok this was worth the wait! Now to find out how soon they come in to shops in Canada! I am loving my 64mm f15 but that is one fan so this twin 40mm should be comparable in size and performance? Excellent looks like it takes the 2200s I have lots!

Wonder the price, maybe won't be too steep with no ailerons on wings just tailerons, elevons whatever you call them? Will be great for belly landing just have to figure out how to protect the nose but my f15 is fine allowing gntle high alpha landings.....

Count me in...

Pre-Ordered

In the meantime I guess I better get one of the UMX A-10's to practice on. I can't believe I just purchased my first EDF... What is this world coming too.

Who knows, if they sell enough of these, maybe they will come out with a bigger sister. Hope springs eternal.
