Hangar 9 T34 Mentor first flight


Great Day, the first flight, entirely predictable.

She's fast though and needs to be slowed down for landing, stalls only when pushed, the suggested rates are good enough.

Barron, good decision, I've had 4 flights with mine now and she's a super flyer, love her to bits, took this shot yesterday.

Hi Dave, Your T-34 looks great. Did you decide to go with the retracts ? I ordered the T-34 today, but I'm thinking of sticking with the fixed gear.

I went with the retracts, just a mechanical set which have worked well. Please, please don't fit fixed gear - the sight of those legs going up is fantastic.
The u/c legs are quite short which means they seem a bit more robust than say the longer ones on my Modeltech Mustang. I was worried if the seerable nose leg is tough enough but so far I've had no problems.

She's a dream to fly, a real 'sorted' airframe and a bit different to all those Mustangs and Corsairs. In a turn she seems to carry a lot of momentum and can turn wide so beware. Landings are fast and need setting up with plenty of time and room. Wing loading is on the higher side so I guess I should expect the above.

Hi Dave, The more I think of it, the more I really wanted to do the retracts anyway I ordered them today. I'll post some pics next month when I maiden. Thanks, NJF72

Just a second thought - I didn't screw on those axles you usually find supplied with the retracts. I always feel this is a weak link that'll give way after a few landings so I bend the U/c leg 90 degrees to form the axle. It's worked find with the Mentor and it's easier than cutting the leg short as the instructions suggest.

what engine size you put on it, is it 2 stroke engine?

I'm starting to slap mine together this weekend. I'm also using the Evolution 46NT. I bought the plane and engine package from horizon hobby for 254.99 (Thats a 5 dollar savings from purchasing them seperately )

5$ Hey that was generous of 'em, mind you, you'd have to pay the equivalent of $320 in the UK for the same items.

Oh yeah, me too. A little bit each weekend. I'm planning on flying it sometime in December probably. True about the price difference. That shipping is such a killer. I'll post my progress once I start. Thanks for all the info so far!
