Build Log
GWS Tigermoth
Found a GWS tigermoth the other day for sale and I have always wanted to fly one.
Here are some pictures, Hopefully it will be a fun build. I am missing one of the Cowling pieces So if anyone has an extra one that that would lend me/ or sell to me, please reach out to me. I have read that the Wing Struts are kinda flimsy and not very rigid. So I copied the wing strut and cut it out on my laser using 1/8" Balsa. Feels much more rigid and it is much lighter. I don't know how it will compare durability wise. Maybe I will put a thin piece of fiberglass on it? I also 3D printed a From Cowl in the mean time from Thingiverse. Credit goes to "sharv999 " I still want the original cowl... |

Wow, a very long time it has been good friend.
Nice job on those struts and you seem to have a nice machine to cut them. I did it myself by hand and it was challenging. Will continue to monitor your progress here. Keep em flying. |

You mean this one?
Thanks, is it the same one by Sharv999? I already printed it. It will do in the meantime, but I like the look of the original one better.

Did a little modeling today...
3D printed some Wing struts that had a little more surface area to glue to wings. I think they came out a little heavy. Each one weights about 9 grams. Maybe I am better off with Balsa/Ply? I don't want to add unnecessary weight. Will test and see. |

Thank you!Quote:
I think I am going to order some GWS stuff and maybe some of the MotionRC stuff. Maybe it was just me but last time I tried Hitec HS-55 they were kinda buzzy and "jittery" |

Made a quick mold of the Wing Joint piece, I am going to try and vacuum form my own piece out of some thicker plastic. Also It will let me keep the original piece just in case I need spares.
I also made a mold of one half of the Cowl piece. I am still looking for the other half. If anyone has the other half please reach out to me =)

Mike, thanks for the suggestion.
Went shopping this morning to Graves RC!
I bought a few different servos. I love visiting Graves! The guy at Graves was like " You have a new IN the box Pico Tigermoth!?" "Dont build it!" "They are so rare and collectible. " |

Just a thought...
Been toying with the idea of just machining or making a mold of this plane?
I think the Fuselage, rudder and horizontal stabilizer would be easy enough to machine/laser-cut out of layers of Blue Core Foam or depron. Not quite sure how I would recreate the wings. They are so delicate and thin. Anyone know of any 2 part pourable foam that has a low viscosity? Something I drew up for fun today... |

Getting the Dihedral Right
When I built my first Pico TM, I held one wing down on the bench with zip-lock bags of sand, and blocked up the other to get the dihedral right as the glue dried. Afterwards, the dihedral was way too shallow. Turns out the wing had deflected upward so when it relaxed a lot of the dihedral went away. On subsequent wings, I used a thin sanding block to remove some foam at the joint area, until the wing could hold the correct angle without bending. Best adhesive for me was epoxy mixed with micro balloons.
