Introduction

HIGHER PERFORMANCE HABU

The Habu STS (Smart Trainer with SAFE®) 70mm EDF was a game-changer that finally made it possible to learn to fly RC airplanes successfully with a jet! E-flite® engineers also realized that a more powerful and capable version would be even more exciting for low-time to experienced pilots to fly. Enter the Habu SS (Super Sport) 70mm EDF jet — a modified version of the Habu STS that offers nearly unlimited vertical performance, more speed, and even more aerobatic capability. It has a 4S to 6S compatible power system featuring a specially-tuned motor and 70mm 10-blade fan, along with a telemetry-capable Avian™ 70-amp Smart Lite ESC. It’s also available in a BNF® Basic version equipped with exclusive Spektrum™ AS3X® and optional-use SAFE® Select technologies. The Habu SS is easy enough for a wide variety of low-time pilots with little to no EDF experience to fly successfully — while also being one of the best all-around fun-to-fly and no hassles high-performance EDF sport jets for experienced pilots too!

Overview

MORE POWER — MORE CAPABILITIES

Based on the legendary Habu — one of the best first and high-performance EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) sport jet platforms EVER designed — the E-flite® Habu SS (Super Sport) 70mm EDF is a more powerful and more capable version of the popular Habu STS (Smart Trainer with SAFE)! It’s a simple, no hassles, easy, and extremely fun to fly high-performance sport jet that’s a perfect first-ever EDF for RC pilots with limited experience — while also being one of the best-ever everyday sport jets for experienced pilots. The Habu SS offers the same incredible low-speed handling and performance as the STS, but features updates and upgrades for more aerobatic capability, higher speeds, and nearly unlimited vertical performance. The specially tuned motor and 70mm 10-blade fan are compatible with 4S to 6S batteries without the need for modifications or upgrades. This factory-installed power system delivers plenty of speed and thrust with popular 4S 3200mAh batteries, added power with 5S batteries, or nearly unlimited vertical performance and speeds up to 100 MPH in a dive with 6S 4000mAh batteries! With Smart and non-Smart batteries, the exclusive 70-amp Spektrum™ Avian™ Smart Lite ESC can provide a variety of real-time power system telemetry data including motor RPM, current, overall battery voltage and more via compatible receivers (such as the AR631 included with the BNF® Basic version) and Spektrum AirWare™ equipped transmitters. Best of all a wide range of pilots, even those who have never flown an EDF before, can enjoy flying this model successfully — especially the BNF® Basic version that includes exclusive AS3X® and SAFE® Select technologies.

Factory-finished in a trim scheme with higher-visibility colors, the airframe is composite-reinforced and strengthened to handle the added speed and aerobatic capabilities right out of the box. The optional-use fixed landing gear is outfitted with smaller diameter wheels and tires for sleeker looks and less drag. The wide-stance gear plus steerable nosewheel makes it easy to taxi, takeoff, and land on paved, dirt, and shorter grass surfaces — or you can install the oversized wheels and tires from the Habu STS to fly from thicker grass and other rough surfaces. You can also remove the landing gear for more speed and vertical performance with easy hand launches over and belly landings on grass. Best of all, the Habu SS 70mm EDF assembles quickly and easily without glue or special tools — so you can be ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge a battery!

Are you new to flying RC (Radio Controlled) aircraft? If you are, we recommend learning to fly with one of our purpose-built trainer aircraft such as the E-flite® Habu STS (Smart Trainer with SAFE) 70mm EDF (www.horizonhobby.cc/HabuSTSRTF). It’s equipped with exclusive and innovative SAFE technology that makes it possible for almost anyone to learn to fly successfully! The Ready-To-Fly (RTF) version includes everything needed to fly in one box and is the perfect choice if you're a new RC pilot.

Exclusive Technologies (BNF® Basic version only) The BNF® Basic version is equipped with exclusive Spektrum™ AS3X® and SAFE® Select technologies. AS3X works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence to deliver a locked-in feel that makes it seem like you’re flying a much larger airplane. Optional-use SAFE Select offers pitch and bank angle limits along with automatic self-leveling that can be turned on and off at the flip of a switch! And if you don’t want to enable the SAFE Select features, simply bind the receiver normally and only AS3X will be active.

Smart Technology The Habu SS 70mm EDF is equipped with an exclusive Spektrum™ Avian™ Smart Lite ESC that can provide a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data including motor RPM, current, battery voltage and more – with Smart and non-Smart batteries – via compatible receivers (including the AR631) and Spektrum AirWare™ equipped transmitters (including the DX6e and 8e, DX6 G2/3 and 8 G2, the DX9, NX6, 8 and 10, iX12, iX20 and others) while you fly.

Versatile Power The factory-installed Spektrum™ Avian™ 70-amp Smart Lite ESC and high-power brushless outrunner motor can drive the 10-blade 70mm fan with a wide range of batteries. Install a 4S 3200mAh battery for plenty of speed and thrust, a 5S battery for added power, or a 6S battery up to 4000mAh to deliver nearly unlimited vertical performance and speeds up to 100 MPH in a dive!

Uniquely Optimized Jets are typically faster and harder to fly than most of their prop-driven counterparts, which can make it difficult for low-time – and sometimes even experienced pilots – to fly them. The unique and optimized airframe design of the Habu SS improves low-speed handling and slow speed performance that makes it one of the easiest to fly jets EVER!

More Capable The lightweight yet durable composite-reinforced EPO airframe has been strengthened to handle more power, higher speeds and higher energy aerobatics. It’s also factory-finished in a high-visibility trim scheme.

Capable Gear The wide-stance tricycle landing gear with a steerable nose wheel offers great ground handling for easier takeoffs and landings on a wide variety of surfaces from paved runways to grass and even dirt. The lower profile wheels/tires offer a sleeker look and less drag, or you can install the optional oversized tires (sold separately) for operation from an even wider variety of surfaces including thick grass. Or, you can leave the landing gear off for more speed and vertical performance plus easy hand launches over and landings on grass.

Easy Assembly The Habu SS 70mm EDF arrives mostly factory-assembled with the power system, servos plus the receiver (BNF® Basic version only) installed. All you need to do is finish some quick and easy final assembly, without the use of glue or special tools, and you'll be ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge a battery!

Bind-N-Fly® Completion Level Advantage (BNF® Basic version only) Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly® (BNF®) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly, and fly! This model is even compatible with the Spektrum DXS transmitter included with many of the most popular E-flite® and HobbyZone® trainer airplane models.

This Bind-N-Fly Basic model is equipped with a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMX® receiver featuring AS3X® (Artificial Stabilization–3-aXis) technology that works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence so you enjoy a sense of stability and precision that makes it feel like you're flying an even larger, expertly tuned aircraft.

If this is your first model of its type, or you want an extra margin of safety while familiarizing yourself with the airplane, you can enable the optional-use SAFE® Select flight envelope protection technology built into the receiver. No complex programming is required. Simply change up the binding sequence as directed in the manual.

With SAFE Select enabled, you get:

Pitch and Bank Angle Limits • These envelope limits keep the airplane from rolling or pitching upside down. They also prevent excessive climb or dive angles.

Automatic Self-Leveling • The airplane instantly returns to and holds level flight when the sticks are released and in the center position. It’s also helpful for keeping the wings level during takeoffs/launches and landings.

Easy Switch Assignment—No Complex Programming Required • The simple procedure for assigning a transmitter switch to turn SAFE Select features on and off doesn't require any complex programming and takes just a few seconds.

If you don’t want to enable the SAFE Select features, just bind the receiver normally and it will function like a standard AS3X receiver.

Plug-N-Play® Completion Level (PNP version only) This Plug-N-Play® (PNP) version comes out of the box with a factory-installed power system and servos that are ready to connect to the compatible receiver of your choice (sold separately), plus the transmitter and battery you provide (also sold separately). Simply install the receiver, finish any final assembly, and fly!

Some additional notes:
  • Pre-orders are being accepted starting today and we'll begin shipping Habu SS models in the EU and US starting late next week (around November 12th)!

  • This model does not have retracts or flaps. Some may not have any interest in it because of that, and that's ok...but please also understand this is INTENTIONAL (so hopefully you can keep any related negative comments to yourself)! The inspiration for this model is based on the spirit of the now-retired ParkZone brand which the first-ever Habu was released under:

    No Hassles. JUST FLY!

Not everyone wants or needs the added cost, complexity and weight that comes along with retracts and flaps to enjoy flying...not even when it comes to EDFs Please be mindful and respectful of this.

  • As noted above, this model does NOT have retracts. This keeps the weight, complexity and cost down (plus the durability and simplicity up!) for those looking for the best first-ever EDF model...or even for very experienced pilots like me looking for a simple, no hassles, easy, and extremely fun to fly high-performance sport jet! I've been flying EDFs and turbine jets for more than 20 years now and the Habu SS is quite possibly the most enjoyable to fly jet EVER! No Hassles. JUST FLY! I can toss it in the car fully assembled and fly it just about anywhere in any conditions...I can't say that for ANY of the dozens of other EDF/turbine jets I've ever owned

  • As also noted above, this model does NOT have flaps. This also keeps the weight, complexity and cost (plus the durability and simplicity up!)! And FWIW, this EDF can land slower than pretty much any other jet out there that has flaps! "It don't need no stinkin' flaps!" Seriously though...its crazy, shocking -- dare I even say criminal -- how slow you can fly and land this jet WITHOUT flaps.

  • Price. Always a sensitive subject. Labor, component and especially shipping costs have gone up many times over the last few years -- and especially the last 6 months (yay inflation! ) -- so unfortunately the price is higher now than we originally targeted when we started the project almost two years ago. At the current point in time it's not much less expensive than the extremely popular E-flite Viper 70mm that includes flaps and retracts. Let's all hope the Viper and other models don't have to increase in price again in the coming months, but for now the Habu SS has to be priced a bit higher than we originally expected because the container shipping cost in particular to get them here is higher than we've ever paid for any other containers. That said, for anyone looking for a simple, no hassles, easy and extremely fun to fly EDF model, it's still a great value! It may be $20 or even $40 more than some would expected/like, but it's still worth the price to anyone/everyone who is looking for an all-around easy and fun to fly EDF unlike anything you can get for any other brand/manufacturer in the market today!

  • Who is this model for? First and foremost, it's for anyone who has at least mastered learning to fly a trainer or another model and is ready for their first-ever EDF! The Viper 70mm is an awesome first-ever EDF for many people...but it's NOT the best first-ever EDF for everyone! The Viper is one of my all-time (after 30 years of experience) favorite models...but the Habu SS actually ends up a notch above it because it's even EASIER and more ENJOYABLE to fly! I also know more people will succeed in learning the ins and outs of EDF/jet flying with the Habu SS versus the Viper 70mm so it will ALWAYS be my first/top recommendation.

  • The Habu STS (Smart Trainer w/SAFE) is only available in RTF and PNP versions...there is no BNF Basic version because we knew this "SS" (Super Sport) version was going to be available in a BNF Basic (and PNP) version instead Anyone who already owns a compatible Spektrum transmitter will want/prefer the BNF Basic version Habu SS to what could have been a BNF Basic version Habu STS.

A STS with a new paint scheme and a more powerfull motor. No retracts or flaps and a higher price tag due to inflation of course. Why not just upgrade your old STS with a new motor, fan combo. Can't wait to see the suggested list price.

I like the colors on this one, not a huge EDF guy, but with fixed gear its more attractive to me, as I used to have the F16 and even on what i thought was a great landing i still managed to bend the retracts on landing and had issues whole time i owned it. didn't keep it for long.
wanted to ask what is a Spektrum™ Avian™ Smart Lite ESC? i am guessing it doesn't have all functions like the regular avain esc?

The SS airframe has additional reinforcements to handle the extra power/speed/aerobatic capability, plus the hatch has been modified to fit up to 6S 4000mAh batteries. The ESC included in the SS is also up to 6S compatible versus the 4S max compatible ESC in the STS. It doesn’t really make sense to upgrade the STS unless you replace the airframe, ESC, and motor (at which point you might as well buy the SS!).

The fixed gear will be a hang up for some…but a godsend for others! No retract units that can fail, pins that can bend, etc. due to bad landings. Simple, reliable, durable and effective!

“Lite” ESCs don’t have the third wire lead. They still deliver overall battery voltage (with Smart and non-Smart batteries), ESC temp, motor RPM, etc. telemetry (and motor reversing!), but they won’t provide individual cell voltages or battery temp when using Smart batteries (like you would get with a “full” Smart ESC). They still provide the bulk of the telemetry data most people are looking for though!

This Habu looks awesome! I used the Habu STS in my RC Flight School YouTube series and was totally blown away by how well the Habu STS flew and how it could be used as a trainer. With the SS model, you get all the great flying characteristics of the STS with the option to go very fast! The SS is also going to be great for the crowd that doesn't want to deal with the difficulties of flying scale military EDF's or has runways that aren't suitable for scale landing gear.

Love the colors on this one as well. Sure shows up in the sky better than my scale military EDF's!

So of course everyone is complaining about the no-retract landing gear, but I see it as a Lemonade moment. Lots of Lemonade!

My first thought was that the gear looks just like an Arrows Marlin's, and there is a fantastic gear upgrade available from RC Castle for that, so why not put it on this plane? https://www.rc-castle.com/index.php?...roduct_id=8854

My second thought was, 'is the mounting system for the Habu available as Spare Parts?" and it is, and its CHEAP! So why not install those on my Arrows 50mm hand launch belly lander jets, or other belly landers like the EFExtra or Havok? https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...s/EFL0959.html

Maybe I shouldnt drink so much coffee...

Anyway I ordered all this stuff and will be trying these mods when I get them.

Certainly an upgrade is an option for people who already own the Habu.

My thought is the same as it is on most HH products: I subtract the price of the AR637T receiver, and Avian ESC from the price of the plane. Call it $150. Now is this plane worth $XXX? Well by ANY measure the Habu, or Conscendo, or any other sub $400 plane is a steal. Even ignoring the Avian, I am gonna put a $70 AR630 receiver in any plane I buy so $230 is still a bargain for a 6S 70mm EDF.

Any way you do the math the Habu and most other Horizon planes are a great bargain.

lot of people was upset the new 1.2 T-28 didn't have retracts, i was one who loved that it didn't have retracts and it has been a favorite plane of mine. it will do some maneuvers most never knew a T-28 would do.
I still see retracts as a negative thing, there fragile and weak point on any plane I have seen yet.
Your adding un needed weight to the plane also, but this hobby is great folks can mod a plane all day lone if you wish.

Looks awesome and I agree with the fixed gear. Maybe on the next version make them optional but I know from the grass field I fly from retracts in foamys don't last long. Might look into getting one of these if I ever kill my Habu STS

Nice alternative to the Habu STS. I think the "trainer" label of the STS put some people off. But, I have an absolute blast with mine. Inverted circuits so slow that everyone is just waiting for it to fall out of the sky and it doesn't. The STS flies off a poorly cut, wet grass field w/o issue on 4s. I also don't miss the retracts and the issues that come with them.

Where has the SS airframe been reinforced? I have seen the wings on my STS flex at the bottom of some maneuvers. I've also folded the wing twice on the sim that was included in the STS RTF. That's only fun on the sim

Always liked the looks of the Habu, even if it looks nothing like an SR-71 . The wing on the STS kinda spoiled the looks, but this looks more like the original. My one beef is it sounds like a 6S 5000 pack won’t fit? Personally I buy planes that fit the packs I have… and I don’t have any 6S small enough to fit.

Otherwise this would have been a nice alternative to the 90mm Viper I’ve been eyeing!

The wing on the SS has been reinforced to keep it from folding (or even flexing for the most part!) It's quite a bit faster and can be flown much more aggressively than the STS...especially when using 6S batteries!
