21 ft. span B-29 Bomber with RC X-1 Rocket

I shot this last weekend at Mac Hodges annual spring fun fly.

The B-29 is very much a gas model. However, I think most anyone interested in any form of RC can appreciate this effort.

I will post more details on this huge ship in a few days.

Here's what I do know...

21 foot span

The plane is version #2...#1 met it's demise last fall after hundreds of flights. Version #1 was smaller...still big but smaller.

4 motors each swing 28 inch props producing over 200 lbs of thrust

The X-1 is powered by rocket motor that is ignited onboard via transmitter.

The two videos on my site are the same footage at different resolution. Please right click and do a "save file as" to minimize my bandwidth depletion. If you have a high speed connection ...the large file is worth it.

I'm moving this post to the Giant Scale forum with a redirect from Open Discussion. Lets see if we can get some contributions in that forum from you guys who fly giant scale or who like me just enjoy watching these magnificant aeroplanes in action. The poll in Open Discussion in the Electric Flight section a few weeks ago showed that there are quite a few dual-fuel flyers in the expanding RC Groups membership so let's hear from you.

I've seen this model fly at a fly-in in Tuscaloosa Al, it is truely amazing to look at on the ground, but the piloting skills of the owner are just as impressive in the air. Seeing a B-29 do an inverted flyby 6 feet off the ground is simply inspiring.

This has got to be the most impressive RC video I've seen!

Anyone else know of any other 'jaw droppers'?

I was lucky enough to see this show twice this last weekend at Top Gun. There are not sufficient superlatives to describe this bird or it's flight performance.

Mac Hodges owns this beast. It is powered by 4 ZDZ 80 engines. I see it every year at the Joe Nall. He does all sorts of impressive things with it. I've seen him flat spin, roll, loop (inside & out) as well as low inverted passes. Here is a link to his online hobbie shop. You can contact him thru the site

I saw this plane at a Giant Scale Fly In in Deland, FL. They sure to get around! The stunts this guy did with that huge plane were amazing. The inverted fly-by and the flat spin were very impressive... as was the launch of the rocket plane. I've never seen anything else quite like it!

That does look impressive! I wish there were more of the large R/C flying events in this area of the country, with gas costing what it does I can't even afford to drive to Seattle, let alone souther California or the east coast!
