hollow shaft

Does anyone know of a supplier for 5 to 8mm hollow motor shafts? I have made variable pitch props before with heli tail rotors. This time I want to try a linear push rod through the motor shaft to simplify things.

SDP/SI has 6 and 8mm, though of course expensive like everything else they sell https://shop.sdp-si.com/catalog/?cid=p352

You could always use stainless steel capillary tube, cheap on ebay.

Why wouldn’t you want to use a hollow shaft on any and every motor?

With a locking bushing could you use aluminum? I’ve never heard of an aluminum shaft period.

We have used a surface hardened shaft and bored it ourselfes.
the the main problem in using a pushrod through a hollow shaft is the friction.
the problem becomes bigger with the lenght of shaft and the rpm of the vpp.
we used small ballbearings into the shaft boring and smaler pushrod.
may be, I can find bck a photo of the old project somewhere on my computer.
with smaller rpm is worked very well.

Many thanks for the link. I agree with others that friction will be an issue. I doubt I can use bearings but a light weight grease packing with an inner brass push rod could work.

Forgetting a “pushrod” (don’t know
what you’re talking about) and just with a standard outrunner shaft and standard bearings, why not a hollow shaft or an aluminum shaft? Especially with a locking bushing both seem doable, no?

I have a 14mm shaft on a motor size which sometimes I’ll see narrower shafts anyway. The shaft’s strength seems overkill and unnecessarily heavy.

You can probably use a bit of teflon tubing as a bearing. Ball bearings are better for high speed, but at such small diameter it would take a lot of RPM to get the surface speed very high.
