Help!

Brushless motor

Hi all currently building a delta similar to a Mugi Evo. I’ve come to the power side of things and trying to get my head around motor/esc/battery’s. I’ve found a 3000kv inrunner that would be perfect to mount to the front without a outrunner bracket etc. Only concern is it was listed as a ducted fan motor running at 85a max draw. Going off previous post about a esc bigger than draw rating how would I go about propping this and what would be a good battery choice if I ran a 100a esc. Any help would be amazing.

Many thanks.

Presumably that's a typo and you have a 3000 rpm/V motor.

If your model is about same size as the Mugi Evo, I gather you'll be limited to about a 6" prop and the model weighs only about 500g and typically uses a 3S 1300 to 2200mAh battery.

That will only need about 100W to fly, drawing about 10A. If your motor is able to handle 85A, it sounds like it is way too big.

If you provide a lot more detail including:
details, at least weight and Kv and preferably a link to your candidate motor
Estimated flying weight
maximum prop diameter that fits
batteries if any you already have and want to use

We can provide useful advice

Thanks for your reply.

The Delta is abit bigger than the Mugi and with all the gear on board weighs 950g on the scales.
Apologies on the typo the motor is a 3000kv I will attach the spec sheet i obtained online to follow this message. I’ve got some 3s 11.1 2200mah battery’s that I’ve been using with the Mugi but happy to buy new if this motor requires.
I don’t want to sound silly but if a motor can handle 85a would putting a lower rated esc be possible resulting in longer flight time or does the motor decide what it wants to draw and then be sucking the power through a underrated esc resulting in a esc failure. I will attach as many pics as poss to show what I’m trying to achieve. Performance/speed is the main goal with this one along with hopefully understanding the math behind mating motors/esc/batts/props.

Many Thanks.

Tommy.

Your motor is near 20% of your all up weight, which really is excessive and unnecessary.
200W at full throttle would be enough power at 950g, and you only need a 60-70g motor to handle that.

But if you can make the model balance with the big motor and assuming a pack around 3S 2200, a 5x3 on 3S should pull about 26A/270W. A 30 or 40A ESC would be ample.
If you used a bigger capacity same weight 2S pack, a 7x4 prop would pull about 46A/300W,in which case you'd need a 50 or 60AS ESC.

Unless you need the weight to balance, you'd be better off given the motor is on the front and you don't have a prop diameter problem to use a smaller lighter motor with lower Kv, running a larger prop.

A 3S example is something like the 82g Turnigy Propdrive 2836-1350 running a 9x6 prop for about 270W

There are also the Turnigy GliderDrive outrunner in a can motors with no external rotating parts, eg 140g 1400 rpm/V 3850-1400 https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-...ucts_analytics. 3S, 8x4 about 240W

Only numbers on it are ACn 16/15/5.
It’s the same size as the old brushed 400.

You're in luck then. A really useful direct drive inrunner, Kv 1700 rpm/V for newer motors; my old one is was advertised as 1800.
Run it on 3S with a 7x5 for about 21A/220W, or if you want speed on 4S with a 6x6 for 24A/340W. I used to have it in a Funjet on 4S pulling around 30A.

Amazing thanks for that Louis. I’ll go with the Mega then. Just to confirm that’s a 7x5 prop ??.

Many Thanks.
