450Amps connector

Hey folks,
My ESC is rated 400Amp (up to 450Amps burst)- motor total 30KWatts -giant scale build.

Looking for connectors to handle it.

Anderson SB series too chunky?

Hi John61CT, The largest SB350 = 350Amp- - yes you're right- it's quite bulky.
I may have to fabricate my own thick lug plates?!!- or double piggy back them.

How about 2 or even 3 of these in parallel?
Put heat shrink round the assembly. One for -ve and one for +ve.

Should be very small and reasonably easy to connect.

Interesting thought jj604; I have a few but at 50Amp each that would be 8 of them- it may work with the puchase of the 200Amp ones you relayed.

If it was me I would use two of the 200Amp connectors in parallel. Very neat and more than adequate for 450A burst.
And big bullet connectors are very reliable - which you probably want in a 30kW giant scale build.

JJ, as you replied - I discovered I had the 8mm gold bullets- yes - I just Googled the rating 200Amps each (which wasn't written on the Tornado pack)- I guess 2 of them would take the 450A burst .

..Is that right- the 8mm and total 15mm long, with a connection about 10mm insert male to female?

Thanks

Don't know the details of the "Tornado" connectors but the Castle Creations 6.5mm bullets are probably genuinely capable of 200 A continuous.

8mm bullets, if properly made, are almost certainly as good or better.

Two in parallel should be fine for your application.

You only need 1 connector in the + cable.

The negative cable does not need to be disconnected.

A single wire and connection is much safer then splitting the load.

Continuous rating is overkill for pulsed current peaks.

Heat gain at the join is what to test.

Thanks Cyclops2, John61CT;
Do connector ratings represent continuous or pulsed current? I assume pulse your talking AC , and continuous you're talking DC?

Yes- testing heat is my main concern.
Battery manufacturer had agreed to put Anderson poles on each lifepo battery as I discussed the setup with them: -
7S x 4 in series = 91 volts (measured meter). Then 2 of this setup in parallel for current/time for 30kW.
However, the Anderson poles look the same medium size as 50 to 80 Amp rated ones- I am concerned.

Current sharing of the two connectors in parallel will be directly proportional to the ratio of the contact resistances - no matter how low they may be. Contact resistance is something rarely mentioned when new let alone after 50 or 100 insertions.

You need to realize that China TOY rc connector are not Electric fork truck quality

Anderson or other fork truck connectors are WAY WAY ......UNDERRATED at rated full current

The smallest 50 amps are used in walk behind Yale BIG BATTERY fork trucks. I worked there. People had loaded fork trucks pinned against a wall with FULL POWER ON. HUGE amps

Motors are 10" X 16 long.

Your 91 vdc CAN & WILL stop your heart EASILY> WET grass or hands . Sweaty hands wet T shirt hot weather. Wear thin plastic or Latex gloves. You are in real danger at 91 volts. Buy your connectors at www.DigiKey.com they had a battery connector section made for what you need.

Nothing to do with AC.

There is no current rating without the TIME factor.

Something rated for 200A continuous, might be 20min

might be fine for 800A if only for 2sec

Since you know your use case, get different sizes and test.

If your rate only raises temp at the connector by 10C you're good to go.
