Wings Over Springs Charity Electric Fly-In 2021 - We’re Back Baby!

From Douglas LeRoy, Event Manager

Sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, this annual event is the largest single-day charity electric fly-in event in the state of North Carolina and is a charity fundraiser benefiting Meg’s Smile Foundation. (www.megsmile.org)

In North Carolina, particularly in late August/early September, the weather can be very unpredictable. Will it be Summer’s last gasp at cooking the population with humidity and heat or Fall’s preview of what’s around the corner? Layer in the ongoing pandemic and you have enough stress to make even the most seasoned event planner run out of antacid! Thankfully, pandemic restrictions eased, the weather cooperated (it was fall-like weather), and Wings Over Springs Charity Electric Fly-In 2021 was on!

Sunrise brought club members and volunteers from the Skyhawks Radio Control Group to the Sugg Farm park complex. Many had never experienced a fly-in before so their anticipation was palpable as they eagerly deployed signs, tents, tables, waste receptacles, and got the check-in area tuned up and ready for operation.

Pilots began to arrive in a steady flow and by 9 AM everyone was nested nicely along the flight line and ready for a day of flying and socializing. A final tally of 45 pilots attended the event. AK Mike from the Parkflyer Podcast joined the festivities again this year and kicked off the flight operations for the day with his Fun Racer.

At around 10 AM the general public began to arrive at this curious event and to see what RC flying and this hobby is all about. We were humbled by the outpouring of support from the community! By the time the food truck arrived, the event field was full with several hundred spectators of all ages filled the field.

The noon demo show was a crowd pleaser. Noon demos opened with a legacy flight from our good friend Jon Youngblood of Johnston County Radio Control (JCAC) who featured the YAK- 54 aircraft that he won in the grand prize raffle at our event in 2019.

Steve Conerly (JCAC) with pilot Alex Frederickson from Raleigh Durham Radio Control (RDRC) got the crowd pumped and cheering with some fantastic 3-D flying of a GP123 powered Skywing Extra V2 built by Kris Barton of Full Throttle RC, part of the Outreach Fabrication Aviation Division.

A stunning F-22 electric jet (complete with simulated afterburners) flown by Jonathan Holmes wowed the crowd. His feature maneuver was the flat spin which was spooky cool to watch.

The demos included a mass launch UMX gaggle flight and closed with a crowd-pleasing display of skillful 3-D helicopter flying featuring Steve (JCAC) and Daniel Lamb (HSSRCG).

Following the demos, we were ready to conduct our charity raffle… Meg’s Smile Foundation: Our sponsored charity is founded and located in Holly Springs and is named in honor of the founder’s daughter (Meg) who died at a young age of terminal brain cancer. The organization works to bring smiles to terminally ill children in North Carolina by providing experiences for them. Donations are raised via a special raffle during out event. This year featured three donations. Two “Intro to RC” prizes available for donations received from the general public were an AeroScout and mini-AeroScout ready-to-fly packages. For registered pilots only, every Meg’s donation earned the pilot a chance to win a vintage F-14 Tomcat decal. This item was made by the Grumman Aircraft Corporation in the mid-seventies and given to pilots, executives, and dignitaries who flew worked on, and supported the F-14 Tomcat development. Really cool!

It felt great to be back after two years and judging from all the smiles I’d say the event was a smashing success all around.

If you missed our event in 2021, mark your calendar for Saturday, September 3, 2022! We look forward to seeing you in Holly Springs, NC!
