Not all Fokker Triplanes were red….
Sharing just for fun….
Red Fokker Dr.1 Triplanes models are so common- to the point where lots of people think that’s the color they’re “supposed” to be… For fun, I built ten 1/72 scale (4 inch wingspan) plastic kits, to showcase the colorful variety of the historical schemes. ( I finally did MvR’s all-red 425/17 as #8.) The planes and pilots: Yellow: Lothar von Richtofen, Jasta 11 Black: Josef Jacobs, Jasta 7 White: Hans Weiss, Jasta 11 Blue: Wilhelm Schwartz, Jasta 13 Lilac: Rudolf Stark, Jasta 34b Green: Friedrich Kempf, Jasta 2 Boelcke Red/white: August Raben, Jasta 18 Red: Manfred von Richtofen, Jasta 11 Black with Yellow dots: Hans Pippart, Jasta 19 Black and White bands: Bruno Loerzer, JG. III ( I still have four more to do…) Notes: - l built Lothar’s plane several years ago. Recent research shows that the top wing of his plane wasn’t painted yellow- lots of older profiles (and plastic kits) have this wrong. (Too late to fix mine now!) - Raben’s plane was red and white - that was the squadron’s colors. Around 40 or so years ago, someone published a profile with the plane in blue and white, and it has been copied by manufacturers ever since. Jasta 18 planes were never blue/white! |

Those are cool! I'm modelling Bongartz's. It has a blue cowl and wheel covers plus an extra Maltese cross on top of the stab. The rest is just streaky camo and pale turqouise undersides. My other (both 1:5 scale) is going to be a plain jane no name version. Just streaky camo... that's all.

Very nice indeed!
Hi RCboater,
What a neat way to play around with color schemes before deciding which one to put on your r/c model. Are those the Revell kits? As a kid growing up, and later as an adult (still growing up!) I built about everything Aurora (later K&B), Revell and Airfix put out in 1/72 and 1/48 scale. Your nice photos bring back many fond memories. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Dale |

Not even all of Manfred von Richthofen's Triplanes were solid red! This is my 1/6 Balsa USA model finished as his 152/17.
I reasoned that the red overpaint was probably applied in the field, so did the "streaky" finish over all the areas it would be applied. Then brushed on thin coats of red for a "see-through" effect. Thinking on the streaky camouflage seems to still be evolving. According to the newest color plates and discussion I could find, gray and brown (and maybe even blue) streaks were incorporated as well as green. This was pretty easy to do using Tamiya acrylics over Oratex fabric. |

BTW that's a very nice little "Staffel" you have! You should think about doing a "Triplane tree" at Christmas ... |

Thanks RCboater
Hi RCboater,
Yeah, I think most plastic of Fokker Triplanes was made of was probably red, although IIRC the Airfix 1/72 DR1 was molded in the light blue. One of my personal favorite DR1 color schemes was Cole Palen's original replica with the pig(?) logo on the side. Went well with his "Black Baron" foolishness that was the Hallmark of all his performances. Regards, Dale |

Fantastic display
RCBoater,
Really excellent work--I've seen Lothar's Dr.I so often with the wing yellow that I would never give it a second thought. The photos of his wrecked Dr.I are about the only ones I know of, and the wing is pretty much overpainted yellow, but thinly. The one of Rudolf Stark is truly unique--I've never seen it in model form. The stab/ elevator painting is dramatic. And Pippart's is one-of-a-kind for sure. Well, they're all unique Fokkers. I really like Fritz Loerzer's scheme... So many Fokkers, so little time. Lyle |

Great looking models. I've always liked the Kempf triplane. I would guess that the Triplanes were all delivered in the streaked green with olive green cowls but most would have had at least the Jasta colors added for identification purposes followed by any individual pilot markings. One thing about individual markings is that they would have been added during down time between missions and during maintenance. The markings of some aircraft evolved over time. Unless you are modeling a particularly well documented aircraft you are probably going to get differences.

My VK isn't modeled after any particular plane, took little from here and there.

Given that many of the Jastas identified themselves with tailplanes painted in a manner unique to that squadron, Jasta 6's black and white striped tails for instance, do you think that they were painted in the same way on the underside, or were they left in the factory turquoise blue?

But those glimmers of documentation are so much fun!
Hi Monza Red & Mgnostic,
A great part of researching a scale model is trying to find documentation of those pesky details that aren't quite so well documented as the rest of the project. I can drive you nuts . . . in a good/fun sort of way though!!! Looking forward to more of this interesting project. Regards, Dale |
