Insane Foamies Full Fuse Yak-54 build and fly thread!
Hey guys!
Soon to be released from Jason, at www.InsaneFoamies.com , This beautiful 14oz full fuse Yak-54 kit. The kit comes with all the hardware, carbon, ply, and pre-bent landing gear! The kit is wonderfully CNC cut, and is a mix of 3mm depron, and 6mm Ultra foam. Every piece is interlocking for a great bond, and a straight aircraft. The fuse is a bit different than the other full fuse kits out there. The sides are rounded, and the top is flat. The kit can also except out runners, or geared inrunners. Please be patient as I upload all the pictures of the build... which was very easy! I built the whole airplane ready to fly in one afternoon, with no directions. I test flew it this morning, and I loved what I saw. I'll be out of town for week, and may not have access to a computer. Partly why I built and flew this thing so quickly ![]() -Jon ![]() |

As there were no directions included with the test kit, I'm making the build thread as I built the aircraft. The final version, and directions may differ from my build.
Start off with the bottom stringer, and attach all of the formers into it. Than attach the top stringers, and middle stringer. Jon |

Next add one side of the fuselage onto all of the stringers, and formers. Go slowly, and make sure it's all going on straight. Because the fuse sides are curved, start gluing at one side. Then once it's dry, roll the foam over the formers, and glue to the other side. This gives the fuse a great rounded look.

Next, we apply all the plywood into the fuse.

Next, Install the other side of the fuselage.

Next, prep the wing. Install the flat carbon rods to the front and back of the wing... It's rock solid!

|

|
|
Now install the wing, and horizontal stab into the fuselage. Ensure they are both on correctly, and are parallel with each other before gluing

Next, we are going to install thew battery tray, battery hatch, and wing braces. Install Velcro on the battery tray, and use the supplied Velcro strap.

Install your choice of motor. Anything the size of a Himax 2015-4100 will work beautifully. I decided to use the Hacker-Eflite motor, geared 6:1. Same as the Himax motor...

Now use the included control horns, and setup your linkages. I recommend sanding the ultra foam before gluing any servos to it. It creates a better bond.

Yes, I plan to paint it when I get back from vacation next Saturday. Until then, I've only painted the canopy.
I've installed the servos in the tail with servo extenders running to the recievcer, which is also located in the battery bay. Here she is, ready to fly! Jon |

So how does it fly you ask?
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. I did a quick test hop to get everything trimmed. It needed two or three clicks of right aileron, and two clicks of right rudder. It flew Perfectly straight, no inputs needed. I landed, and got the camera out. Went back up again, and first thing I did was an awesome slow rolling circle. Holds all the positions very well. The ailerons were very effective, but not out of control. A bit of expo made sure of that ![]() The plane does GREAT knife edge. A slight bit of pitch coupling toward the gear. However, nothing that can't be input with your own hands, or even mixed out with the radio. The plane slows down in Knife edge very well. I also tested out the blenders and flat spins. I need to move my CG back a little bit, but they showed great potential. Inverted is a piece of cake. Just as stable upside down as it is upright. The inverted harriers are a thing of beauty. Very slow, with almost no wing rock. Super stable too. My test flight was very short, as I needed to get things done today before I leave. It turns out the video I had was accidentally deleted! D'oh! If I can't get another one today, I will have one for sure when I get back. I will also be painting the yak in the red, blue, yellow and white color scheme. I can't wait to fly it again ![]() Thanks Jason! ![]() -Jon |
