2021 F5J Nats Coverage

Today kicked off the 2021 F5J National Championship competition in Muncie, Indiana. The day started early with a 7:20am pilots meeting in the fog. We got in early to set up our planes in the dark before sunrise and test flights were sketchy due to the low level fog that made it hard to see your plane. That burned off over time and Muncie delivered some prime soaring conditions. Not too easy and not too crazy. With 75 pilots flying there are 6 groups of 13 flying making for an interesting landing situation, but there is plenty of room. It's been fun to fly and watch the event unfold. Scoring is hard to come by but we'll get that posted as soon as we can. For now, enjoy these photos from today's event.

So we flew 7-1/2 rounds today. Tomorrow we’ll fly some more and take the top 13 pilots into the Fly-Offs. It’s going to be a fun one!

Thanks for posting the pictures and good luck to all participants! Looks like Oleg made it to the contest.

Did that midair-ed plane with the broken outer wing hit the power lines? Or is that just an illusion?

Best,
Reto

It was a stress break as the pilot lost sight and pulled up. He landed safely on the field. The power lines are a long ways away.

Some impressive flying to witness the first day, Garber flew low to a different zip code, hooked into the lift, got back within the minute overage to record a time , quite a flight to watch for us mere mortals !

Many thanks to Jim and his crew for all their efforts in putting on the event, sorry I couldn’t stay for the second day.

Here's some photos from the Fly Offs and Winners! The Fly Offs were very fun to watch with low launches and some great flying. Congrats to Jim, Jeff and Brady for the top podium finish!!
