My usual practice, thinning down Epoxy to seal off anything I require, today, few balsa stab bits before painting.
Been doing it for the last 33 years, still alive, LOL. |

I seldom accept anecdotal advice from folks on the internet. Doing something for 20 years is not evidence of safe or effective practices, it only means they got away with what ever the action was.
To thin or to not thin epoxy with a solvent is based on certain needs and thinning epoxy with a solvent is doable but comes with caveats. Know the caveats and how they apply to the situation you have at hand and it may be OK. But...thinning epoxy with a solvent always has a drawback somewhere, you just need to be certain that drawback does not affect the project at hand. A very good, concise and accurate read about thinning epoxy with heat and with a solvent. Thinning Epoxy |

I too have been thinning epoxy for decades FOR CERTAIN APPLICATIONS. Please read that again. Would I thin epoxy used to add strength? Nope. Will I thin epoxy to glass a surface with 3/4 oz cloth to prep for paint? Every single time. Will I thin epoxy to fuel proof an engine compartment? Yep again. So here we are with a thread topic of glassing a wing center section. I would not thin the epoxy with a solvent. I would brush some epoxy onto the bare wood where the glass was to be attached and then lay the glass down. The glass will pull the resin up and saturate the glass. A little heat with a hair dryer will speed up the process. Once completely saturated blot with a paper towel. Easy peasy. When applying light cloth for a painted surface, thin 10%. Lay the cloth on the surface and smooth out. Dribble a little mixed resin and spread with an old credit card. Try to remove as much resin as possible then again blot with a paper towel. Sand lightly with 220 grit after 48 hours and apply another coat of thinned resin and again blot with paper towel. Sand with 320 and you are ready for primer.

33 years of experience is lot more useful than lousy 20! LOL. |
