5G Powered Racing Drone

The DRL or Drone Racing League is partnering with T-Mobile to use a new 5G powered drone for racing events. The technology will be used to transmit HD video from a secondary camera on the drone to viewers in person and on Television broadcasts. They are trying to improve the spectator experience to really take drone racing to the mainstream audiences as a legitimate sport. The video below really feels more like an ad for T-Mobile's 5G network, but it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. The video quality look ok, but the frame rate looked super low from the example footage. Hopefully it works better with some adjustments and can actually improve the spectator experience. We're eager for the next DRL season and to see how the 5G racing drone performs.

What do you guys think about using 5G to transmit video? Could this tech be used for control and the pilot's video feed one day? Let me know your thoughts.

it looks interesting, but based on the video feed there is still far too much latency to actually fly using the 5g link
