Re using what other club members use, I still think the 'feel' of a set is more important. And, as a beginner, I'd expect set-up to be relatively simple so support 'at the field' SHOULD be less important. Although I think we have all seen beginners with even the very basic things wrong ! Also, amusingly, most 'radio huddles' at my field now seem to be among Spektrum users :-) I think us OpenTx users tinker more at home. I am not tying to knock a brand - they all have strengths and challenges.... |

The 'feel' of a set. In the older days there was a definite difference between radios. Now I do not think there is enough difference to matter. Most radios seem to have a similar design these days. Most Spektrum problems I see usually stems from something not working right (or was set up wrong). What I do find entertaining with OpenTx users is that they have the attitude that they can figure out all brands (which is never the case). Don't get me wrong. I've dabbled with OpenTx a little, and have much respect for those who have conquered it. But they soon learn that OpenTx does not equate to an "all radios expert". |

No need to show proof. I did not doubt.

Another anecdotal comment on opentx. One of my fbs had a Taranis and recently got a RM tx16s (a beautiful radio, by the way, good looking, good ergo for my medium large hands, more capability than my TGY 9xrPro, which already has more than I will ever use) he uses opentx and found it more difficult to set up his new radio with opentx than his taranis. I gather that the opentx guys have made the firmware so capable for so many situations that it is moving beyond many guys interest level. I personally use ersky9x (erskyTX for everything besides TGY radios) and find it way more intuitive for programming than the little I have seen opentx or even Spektrum. It is currently supported well by Mike Blandford here on rcg with others' help. Any open source radio can be flashed with it to try and easily reflashed with opentx if one wants. For general sport flyers wanting the freedom of open source I highly recommend it.

Totally agree re RM TX16 - just got one as backup for my Taranis but looks like it'll be the other way round!
Now toying with flashing it with EdgeTX so I can use the touch screen for functionality and not just aesthetics....... more tinkering |

If he can do it on the Taranis, he can almost certainly do it the same way on the TX16S. There are some minor UI differences between the two, mostly around model selection and accessing the monitor page. |

Be careful with the latest firmware update on the TX16S. I had a friend who updated, only to lose to planes. When he inquired about the update he was told they are working on it. He went back to the previous firmware and it works fine.
He is now playing with a new FrSky radio (don't remember which one) just to see if he likes it. I bet he will have a hard time choosing... |

While the structure of the UI are the same, there is a huge difference in how the UI elements look between a B&W display radio and a color display radio. The TX16S looks substantially better than a Taranis. The display can display more information at once. And if you upgrade your TX16S to EdgeTX to get the touch screen functionality, the UI improves even more.

Agree totally re colour interface - TX16 soooooo much better than Taranis. Wonder if there will be a touch-screen made available for Taranis.... I'd like that very much.
Not sure which bits of OpenTX are now more difficult - I think the basics still work pretty much the same way as they did many releases ago. More than happy to be proven wrong :-) |
