40" VTOL Harrier beginning to take shape

I am working on a Harrier, not using one large fan, but instead 4 small GWS EDF 50 fans and 4 Medusa 4000 motors on 4-cells. Each motor is putting out 9 ozs of thrust and the total weight is estimated at around 22-24 ozs. Weigh of the airframe without wings and tails is 3.8 ozs. So adding up the weight of components and adding 2 ozs to the airframe it should be 22 ozs RTF.

4 speed controls and if you look at the pics at the top you can see the rotation mechanism.

Looks Good,

How do You plan on keeping the plane stable during hovering?

I am guessing three gyros? Exceedingly cool project.

Gyros for pitch and roll. No Yaw control as of yet. I am pretty comfortable with nose in hovering so if it spins on me its not a problem. To add yaw control later if needed, I will just add little vanes in the thrust of the rear motors with small servos.

Thanks, but not sure if i am goign to finish it. have the gyros and motors unopened and doesn't look like the airframe is going to make weight so i want to be able to return them.

Tumbler, have you thought of doing this with a larger airframe and motors, or do you feel that the additional needed battery weight is self defeating?
On a different note, AirX told me about your Himax 2025-5300 edf55 getting 22oz thrust. I decided to put this setup in my just completed Yak23, and am getting at least 20oz, as it pulls out of my hand at 20ozAUW.
For a hovercraft, this batt and edf setup probably weighs about 9oz, and as we know, 22oz thrust. Four of these could have 40+oz of additional thrust for the airframe and equipment. Would be interesting.

Too bad You scrubing the project

Just for interest, how do the gyros keep the plane stable during VTOL? Are they connected between the receiver and ESC's, and then tell the motors to turn faster or slower depending on the attitude?

The spinning You were talking about, is that induced by all fans turning in the same direction?

Thanks for the info,

oh boy!! where's this thread? The one where 22oz on himax?

the best we can get is as follows:

3s 2450, himax 2025-5300, alfa fan 18oz at 20A at 51000rpm
same setup on wemo micro 50mm fan at 53000rpm for over 14oz at 19A.

On 5s we are spinning the 2025-4200 at high 50k rpm for over 21oz.

Are you running the gws fan on more than 3s?

What rpm are you getting (AirX and others were claiming plastic failure at 30k with the gws fans).

Since the gws fans are aggressively pitched, i cant understand how you are getting them to run fast.....please tell!!
