Introduction

BIGGER FLIES EVEN BETTER

The full-scale Viper was designed to offer fighter-jet looks and performance along with the stability of a low-wing sport airplane so more pilots could enjoy flying a jet. The E-flite® Viper 90mm EDF model follows suit, both in its appearance and how it delivers the widest flight envelope possible — whether you’ve flown many jets before or even if it’s your first large-scale jet model. We scaled up the extremely popular Viper 70mm EDF to create the first 90mm EDF powered and largest jet from E-flite® yet! This larger version delivers the same excellent speed, vertical performance and aerobatic capabilities, plus it’s still easy to take off, fly and land – especially when equipped with the exclusive AS3X® and optional-use SAFE® Select technologies included with the BNF® Basic version. It’s the perfect large-scale EDF choice for low-time and experienced jet pilots alike!

Overview

A UNIQUE LARGE-SCALE JET EXPERIENCE

The E-flite® Viper 90mm EDF is the Smartest, best handling, and easiest to fly large-scale model of the popular jet yet! It’s a scale jet that flies smoothly and handles like a sport airplane — yet is also capable of incredible aerobatics and top speeds! But what truly sets it apart is how easy it is to take off, fly, and land, which makes it the BEST choice for a first large-scale jet model. Assembly is fast and simple, with no glue required. The lightweight, composite-reinforced EPO airframe is factory-finished in the now iconic Aircraft Studio Design trim scheme from the popular 70mm model. And the eight factory-installed digital, metal-geared servos with ball-link equipped linkages, plus control surfaces with pinned hinges, deliver crisp and precise control at every speed. Functional features include flaps, LED landing and navigation lights, and electric retracts with shock-absorbing, trailing-link struts on the nose and main gear so you can fly from grass and other surfaces with ease.

The BNF® Basic version includes a 12-blade 90mm fan, powerful 6S-compatible brushless inrunner motor, and a 130-amp Avian™ Smart ESC that all work together with the expertly optimized ducting to deliver an abundance of speed and thrust plus a turbine-like sound. With this power system, the Viper 90mm is capable of level flight tops speeds up to 120+ MPH and offers great vertical performance with 6S 4000mAh to 7000mAh batteries. It’s also equipped with a factory-installed Spektrum™ AR637TA receiver featuring exclusive AS3X® and optional-use SAFE® Select technologies. When using compatible transmitters, the receiver and Smart ESC supply battery voltage, current, motor RPM and other telemetry data in real-time — along with optional-use motor reversing to shorten rollouts after landing and for other special ground handling capabilities. An ARF Plus version is also available for pilots who prefer to install their own choice of ducted fan unit, motor and ESC. Either way, for low-time to experienced jet pilots this model delivers a large-scale EDF experience unlike any other!

ARF Plus Completion Level (ARF Plus version only)
The Almost-Ready-To-Fly (ARF) Plus version comes out of the box with factory-installed servos, retracts and lights that are ready to connect to the compatible receiver of your choice (sold separately), plus the transmitter and battery you provide (also sold separately). There’s even room to fit two 6S 3200–5000mAh batteries so you can run them in parallel to achieve class-leading performance and flight times.

Functional Features
Factory-installed LED navigation and landing lights, nose gear door and flaps are functional features that take your experience to another level.

Capable Gear
Shock-absorbing, trailing link struts on the nose and main gear soak up the bumps of rough surfaces including grass and make it possible to fly from a wider variety of fields. The reliable electric retracts are equipped with durable metal components, and the steerable nose wheel plus wide-spaced main gear offers excellent ground handling.

Unmatched Capability
The Viper design offers incredible handling across a wide speed range and flight envelope. From slower-than-expected landings and low-speed passes to 120+ MPH high-speed flybys, the airframe and power system combine to deliver unbelievable performance and aerobatic capability so you can perform giant loops, rolls, endless knife edge flight, snaps, tumbles and other maneuvers almost effortlessly.

Durable Precision
The composite-reinforced EPO airframe is lightweight yet durable. And the eight factory-installed digital, metal-geared servos with ball-link equipped linkages, plus control surfaces with pinned hinges, deliver crisp and precise control at every speed.

Easy Assembly
No glue is required for assembly and you can have the Viper ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge a battery! The stabs plus the two-piece wing with hands-free connections bolt into place and can easily be removed for convenient storage and transport. Plus it’s factory-finished in an exclusive and unique high-visibility trim scheme by Aircraft Studio Design.

Bind-N-Fly® Completion Level Advantage
Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly and fly!

This Bind-N-Fly Basic model is equipped with a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMX® receiver featuring AS3X® (Artificial Stabilization–3-aXis) technology that works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence so you enjoy a sense of stability and precision that makes it feel like you're flying a much larger, expertly tuned aircraft.

If this is your first model of its type, or you want an extra margin of safety while familiarizing yourself with the airplane, you can enable the optional-use SAFE® Select flight envelope protection technology built into the receiver. No programming is required. Simply change up the binding sequence as directed in the manual.

With SAFE Select enabled, you get:

Pitch and Bank Angle Limits
• These envelope limits keep the airplane from rolling or pitching upside down. They also prevent excessive climb or dive angles.

Automatic Self-Leveling
• The airplane instantly returns to and holds level flight when the sticks are released and in the center position. It’s also helpful for keeping the wings level during takeoffs and landings.

Easy Switch Assignment—No Complex Programming Required
• The simple procedure for assigning a transmitter switch to turn SAFE Select features on and off doesn't require any complex programming and takes just a few seconds.

If you don’t want to enable the SAFE Select features, just bind the receiver normally and it will function like a standard AS3X receiver.

Some additional notes:

• You can pre-order starting later today and the first shipments are currently expected to begin going out in the US and in EU around late July (but that could become early August if container shipments continue to get delayed ).

BNF Basic version (EFL17750) = $549.99 in the US; ARF Plus version (EFL17770) = $419.99 in the US

We'll also have a few of these, along with the all-new F-16 Falcon 80mm EDF, on display and flying at EDF Jet Jam later today and throughout the event!

• Top level flight speed is 120+ MPH using a 6S 5000mAh to 7000mAh 30C Spektrum Smart LiPo battery.

• Average flight times are around 3-6 minutes when using a 6S 5000mAh to 7000mAh 30C Spektrum Smart LiPo battery...flight times will of course vary depending on conditions, the performance of your actual battery, flying style/throttle usage, etc. There's also room to fit up to 2pcs of 6S 3200mAh to 5000mAh batteries to run them in parallel for added flight time (or in series for those who prefer to use up to 12S in the ARF Plus version!)

• The landing gear is all-metal, shock-absorbing AND trailing-link all around!!! The model is also larger and more powerful than most of our EDFs to date so it has NO problems with grass ops! Grass surfaces vary greatly though (length of the grass, thickness of the grass, how rough the ground is under the grass, etc.), so YMMV when it comes to that.

• The optional-use motor reversing is available with the BNF Basic version and requires a 7+ channel transmitter. Motor reversing is NOT a gimmick as you can see multiple times throughout our video below...you can use it to shorten the rollout after landing by upwards of 1/2 to 2/3! This makes it possible to land the Viper 90mm in shorter distances than the 70mm version

This looks awesome and the throttle reversing is icing on the cake. I am a fan of sport jets and had been wanting a bigger Viper ever since owning and flying the 70mm version. Very happy to see this. Well done HH.

That will simply buff out

Could be a very good good candidate for a X45/K45 turbine conversion with an ARF version available - nice one

This fits into a spot where there is no other plane like it. Much bigger than say a Stinger 90, should fly better. Offered as a kit plus so people can put in some power, 8, 10 or 12S..

Well done!

Too bad you can't use the throttle reversing with the included RX. You will have to ditch the included RX and then buy an 8CH to make the reverse work(better choice)...or buy an ARF+ and then get a stock power system and rx separate for reverse thrust ($300+). I think the reverse will mostly be a novelty unless flying this jet with massive flight packs that increase the landing speed... In stock trim i'm sure the landing distance is pretty good without reverse.

Will Horizon be offering an PNP version? (everything except RX)

It is nice to see Eflite finally embrace the 90mm size. Bigger is better for so many reasons...

Read Jason’s post. Throttle reversing is included in the BNF version, so comes factory with the plane. You need a 7 channel TRANSMITTER to make use of throttle reverse.

When I saw this video posted this morning, I thought “oh that’s cool. At least the 70mm viper is getting revamped with the new Spektrum smart technology.” Then it shows the panning shot with the 70mm then a larger viper, then I was very interested.

Good choice on a plane to sell. Probably have to add this to my collection and will earn its place next to the carbon z t28, eflite 70mm f16, Freewing me262 v2.

Have been eyeballing the 80mm eflite f16 but I’m not a fan of grey on grey planes, so this viper ticks all the boxes. And perfect it can use both 5000mah, 6000mah and parallel 3200’s.

How did they know that’s what I run in my other planes…? It’s like they’re psychic. Good job keeping standard battery sizes for the new planes (with the option to go larger ~7000mah).

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!! Did Jason mention 12s capability (probably not with stock power setup since referring to ARF platform)…..

So you mean I can buy this BNF, fly it for hundreds of flights until the power system gives up years down the road and upgrade it to a 12s setup and there’s enough room for 2x in series 5000mah…….

This is going to be epic…

LOL Oh got it...thanks. I read TX but my brain said RX...need more coffee. I forgot the new gen AR637TA 6 ch has a hidden NP 7th channel for gyro/safe...but i guess it can be used for this too...or you will have to not use the 7ch for gains? Seems like something will have to give. Anyway...this plane will not need gyro gains or reversing so either way it's just fine

air-jon, the receiver has 6 ports but it sees all the data from the tx(not just 1 through 6) , so can use the higher channels for things that don't require a separate port (such as reversing with the avian esc).
It's not just a "hidden" 7th channel,.. it's all channels being sent from tx. when tuning some 630/631/637's I've used 7 for reversing on an avian and 8,9,10 on different sliders and the knob on an ix12 to adjust roll/pitch/yaw gain.

Be hard to get your hands on one here I reckon, this thing will sell like hot cakes. Sport jets are a gateway drug.

I'm guessing it's the newish FMS 1950kv EDF unit? Nice to see eflite playing at the larger scale. The 8S 1500kv setup in this would be tidy

Indeed, even the older 636 was effectively a 9 channel Rx with 6 outputs. Bind two to a plane and you can do some neat stuff (eg. independent as3x tune in a thrust vectoring nozzle).

Unless I’m mistaken, it’s actually the Avian ESC that does it. On at least some of them, you can program the brake to be a switch-activated reverse. All handled through the throttle channel it seems.
