Introduction

EVOLUTION OF A LEGEND

Many RC pilots got their first taste of flying a Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) capable airplane with the original E-flite® Timber® 1.5m model. Its friendly handling, nimble sport performance, and takeoff-and-land-almost-anywhere abilities made it one of the most popular RC aircraft of all time — widely acclaimed and highly recommended as a great “next step” after a trainer, as the perfect first STOL-capable aircraft, and as one of the best all-around, fun-to-fly sport models for a wide range of pilots. Its next evolution, the Turbo Timber® 1.5m, proved even more popular than the original with the addition of metal-geared servos, a 3S and 4S compatible power system, plus a turboprop-styled nose and 3-blade propeller. Now comes the Turbo Timber® Evolution 1.5m, ready to continue the Timber legend with new upgrades that deliver more durability, convenience, and capabilities than ever before — plus a fresh and modern look!

Overview

SMARTER, STRONGER AND MORE CAPABLE

The E-flite® Turbo Timber® Evolution 1.5m has been evolved into the Smartest, most convenient, capable, and durable Timber yet! Popular features from the original Timber are all there: the shock-absorbing landing gear with oversized, tundra-style wheels; optional-use float set and leading edge slats; functional slotted flaps; and an LED lighting system with landing, navigation and strobe lights. So are the enhancements that gave the Turbo Timber® more performance and capabilities, including a turboprop-styled nose, 3-blade prop and spinner, a more powerful 3S and 4S compatible power system, and a stiffer wing with durable, reliable metal-geared servos. Now the Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m adds a new top hatch for faster, easier battery changes, plus combined connectors for simpler wing installation and removal. Strengthened landing gear mounts improve the model’s durability and STOL capability when flying from rough terrain. The proven Turbo Timber power system is upgraded with an exclusive Spektrum™ Avian™ 60-amp Smart ESC, and the BNF® Basic version is equipped with an AR637TA receiver to provide full-range, real-time telemetry data including battery voltage, current, motor RPM and more — plus motor reversing for special ground handling and other capabilities — along with the benefits of AS3X® and optional-use SAFE® Select technologies. There’s even a fresh, modern trim scheme for the durable, composite-reinforced airframe! The Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m remains the best “next step”, everyday sport and STOL-capable model for a wide range of pilots — only it’s now better than ever!

Exclusive Technologies (BNF® Basic version only)
The Turbo Timber® Evolution 1.5m is equipped with exclusive Spektrum™ AS3X® and SAFE® Select technologies. AS3X works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence to deliver a locked-in feel that makes it seem like you're flying a much larger airplane. Optional-use SAFE Select offers pitch and bank angle limits along with automatic self-leveling that can be turned on and off at the flip of a switch! And if you don't want to enable the SAFE Select features, simply bind the receiver normally and only AS3X will be active.

Smart Technology
Both the PNP and BNF® Basic versions of the Turbo Timber® Evolution 1.5m are equipped with an exclusive Spektrum™ Avian™ 60-Amp Smart ESC that can provide a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data including motor RPM, current, battery voltage and more via compatible Smart receivers (such as the AR637TA installed in the BNF Basic version) and Spektrum AirWare™ equipped transmitters (including the DX6e and 8e, DX6 G2/G3 and 8 G2, the DX9, NX6, 8 and 10, the iX12, iX20 and others) while you fly. It also features optional-use motor reversing to offer special ground handling and other capabilities.

Versatile Gear Options
Thick grass, gravel paths, dirt trails — even local lakes and ponds — you can fly off of these and many other surfaces that are impossible for most models of this size to handle. The stronger, reinforced mounts in the fuselage, plus shock-absorbing landing gear equipped with oversized, tundra-style wheels and tires, soaks up the bumps of rough surfaces and provides excellent prop clearance. The included float set features dual water rudders for superb steering control. Whichever gear option you choose to fly with, both are easy to install and can be swapped out in minutes.

STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) Capable
The Turbo Timber® Evolution’s wing is designed with features like drooped wingtips and functional slotted flaps, and accepts optional-use leading edge slats (included) for improved slow flight and STOL performance. These features, along with the lightweight design and high-power brushless motor, make it possible to spring into the air or float down to land in as little as two feet or less.

Versatile Power
The factory-installed brushless power system features a Spektrum™ Avian™ 60-amp Smart ESC along with a specially-tuned motor and 3-blade prop that deliver an abundance of thrust with a 3S LiPo battery, or more power and unlimited vertical performance with a 4S battery without the need for any modifications or upgrades. Plus, the more convenient top hatch and larger battery compartment makes it easier to fit batteries from 3S 2200mAh to 4S 5000mAh to achieve a wide variety of performance and flight times.

Versatile Durability
Composite-reinforced, hollow-core construction with EPO material delivers a lightweight yet durable airframe. The Turbo Timber® Evolution 1.5m also features a stiffened wing that improves aileron authority and roll rates, plus it’s equipped with durable and reliable metal-geared servos all around.

LED Lights
Like the original, the Turbo Timber® Evolution 1.5m comes with realistic-looking LED landing, navigation and strobe lights that are factory-installed and powered from the flight battery.

Easy Assembly
No glue is required for assembly, and because the few parts that need to be assembled easily bolt into place, the Turbo Timber® Evolution 1.5m can be ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge the flight battery. The two-piece wing, now featuring combined servo and LED connectors, also makes transport and storage more convenient than ever before.

Bind-N-Fly® Completion Level Advantage
Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly and fly!

This Bind-N-Fly Basic model is equipped with a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMX® receiver featuring AS3X® (Artificial Stabilization–3-aXis) technology that works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence so you enjoy a sense of stability and precision that makes it feel like you're flying an even larger, expertly tuned aircraft.

If this is your first model of its type, or you want an extra margin of safety while familiarizing yourself with the airplane, you can enable the optional-use SAFE® Select flight envelope protection technology built into the receiver. No complex programming is required. Simply change up the binding sequence as directed in the manual.

With SAFE Select enabled, you get:

Pitch and Bank Angle Limits
• These envelope limits keep the airplane from rolling or pitching upside down. They also prevent excessive climb or dive angles.

Automatic Self-Leveling
• The airplane instantly returns to and holds level flight when the sticks are released and in the center position. It’s also helpful for keeping the wings level during takeoffs/launches and landings.

Easy Switch Assignment—No Complex Programming Required
• The simple procedure for assigning a transmitter switch to turn SAFE Select features on and off doesn't require any complex programming and takes just a few seconds.

If you don’t want to enable the SAFE Select features, just bind the receiver normally and it will function like a standard AS3X receiver.

Plug-N-Play® Completion Level
This Plug-N-Play® (PNP) version comes out of the box with a factory-installed power system and servos that are ready to connect to the compatible receiver of your choice (sold separately), plus the transmitter and battery you provide (also sold separately). Simply install the receiver, finish any final assembly, and fly!

E-flite Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m BNF Basic/PNP (4 min 12 sec)

Some of my (personal!) thoughts and tips:

We’ll be accepting pre-orders starting today, May 27th, but these will not be in stock and shipping until around the middle of July. The reason we’re announcing it so “early” is because this replaces the very popular Turbo Timber 1.5m which has been out of stock for over a month now. Many consumers and dealers are starting to ask when we’ll be getting more stock of Turbo Timbers, and we’ve received many backorders over the last few weeks because it’s such a popular model, but we won't be getting anymore because only the Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m will be available/in production from now on (BTW, while many parts are interchangeable between both models, the parts specifically for the original Turbo Timber will continue to be available for MANY years to come!)

US price will be $299.99 for the BNF Basic version and $259.99 for the PNP version. The BNF Basic version includes a 637TA receiver, and both versions include an Avian 60A Smart ESC. Motor reversing is optional-use when using 7+ channel transmitters (and a Smart compatible receiver like the AR637TA installed in the BNFB). Without that it only needs a 5-channel minimum transmitter, or 6-channels to put SAFE Select on a separate channel (gear/5 preferred for that).

On a related note, many relative newcomers to the hobby are told (by other hobbyists online, at the field, in stores, etc.) to buy the Turbo Timber as their second airplane after a trainer. We agree with that recommendation because it’s an excellent “next step” after a trainer model…but there’s one big catch! Most newcomers buy one of our RTF HobbyZone or E-flite trainers that now include the DXS transmitter to learn to fly on. The DXS is a 7-channel transmitter, but the way it comes configured with our RTF trainer airplanes out of the box, channel 7 is mapped to the “D” switch (which is usually channel 6/aux 1/flaps for most other models/transmitters) and channel 6 is mapped to the “A/Bind/Panic” button (which means the flaps are down unless you hold the button down to make them go up…that doesn’t make sense of course). In the coming weeks we’ll be releasing an update for the DXS transmitter (and in the future, all new production DXS transmitters will include this firmware) that adds a second airplane “profile” to the transmitter. After updating the transmitter, by turning it on while holding two trim levers then moving the corresponding trim lever after, you can change to the “extra functions” profile. In this profile, channel 7 is mapped to the “A/Bind/Panic” button, channel 6 is mapped to the usual “D” switch (which works with the flaps), and channel 5 is still mapped to the B switch (which will work for turning SAFE Select on/off). This will make the DXS compatible with the Turbo Timber Evo so people moving up from a trainer don’t also have to spend $200+ on a new computer transmitter after recently spending $200-$400 on an RTF trainer PLUS $300 on the Turbo Timber Evo!

This update will make the DXS compatible with many/most of our other 5+ channel airplanes equipped with retracts and flaps. HOWEVER, there are limitations. The DXS cannot be programmed for flap to elevator mixing/compensation! For models like the Timber, this means it will pitch up a LOT when you deploy the flaps without SAFE Select on. It works, but it’s far from ideal. However, the low-time pilot can simply use the DXS to fly the Timber with the flaps up. Then, if/when they’re ready to have mixing/compensation, they can buy a new computer transmitter! By not “forcing” them to buy that computer transmitter just to fly their new Timber, we expect more of them will make that “next step” to becoming long-term hobbyists because they don’t feel obligated to spend more than they can currently afford/expected to after learning to fly their first airplanes successfully.

More details regarding that DXS update will be coming soon on our websites, in videos, etc.!

Here are some additional notes regarding the TT Evo:

• This is not “yet another Timber” as some will be quick to think/say! It replaces the current Turbo Timber 1.5m (which replaced the original Timber 1.5m), and that means we will still only have 4 total Timber models available in the E-flite brand:

1) UMX Turbo Timber (which replaced the original UMX Timber)
2) Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m (which replaces the Turbo Timber 1.5m that replaced the original Timber 1.5m)
3) Night Timber X 1.2m
4) Timber X 1.2m

We originally thought the Night Timber X might replace the original Timber X, but because both are selling so well they’ll both be staying in the lineup for the foreseeable future! Also, while some may scoff at us offering new and/or updating Timber models, it's important to remember these are some of the VERY BEST SELLING RC models of ALL TIME...and that MANY people own more than one of them

Please also keep in mind we don't "only ever release Timbers, Cubs, T-28s and P-51s!" as some people often claim. We typically release nearly TWO DOZEN new airplane models each year, from ultra micro to giant scale, from trainers and STOL-capable models to warbirds and jets. Around 2/3 to 3/4 of those are ALL-NEW designs, and the remainder are usually NEW updates/upgrades of previously available models. For example, these are the models we've released in the last year or so (and there would have been quite a few more if development/production hadn't been delayed due to the pandemic ):
  • E-flite A-10 Thunderbolt II Twin 64mm EDF
  • E-flite UMX Citation Longitude Twin 30mm EDF
  • E-flite Ultimate 3D
  • HobbyZone Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m
  • E-flite Conscendo Evolution 1.5m
  • E-flite Habu STS 70mm EDF
  • Hangar 9 Pitts S-2B 50-60cc
  • HobbyZone Mini AeroScout
  • E-flite F-18 Blue Angels 80mm EDF
  • E-flite V1200 1.2m
  • Hangar 9 OV-10 Bronco Twin 30cc
  • E-flite UMX Night Vapor
  • E-flite T-28 Trojan 1.1m
  • E-flite Focke-Wulf Fw 190A 1.5m
  • E-flite UMX A-10 thunderbolt II Twin 30mm EDF
  • E-flite DRACO 2.0m
  • E-flite F-16 Falcon 80mm EDF
  • HobbyZone Apprentice S 2 1.2m

So if you don't like this (or any future) announcement/release, you should wait a few weeks to see what the next one is...because it could be COMPLETELY different and something you like/want much more! In fact, our next announcement/release will be our largest EDF yet...which is quite a bit different than this Timber

• This truly is “The Smartest, most capable and durable Timber yet!” It now has Smart technology that adds capabilities including telemetry and motor reversing, plus it has MUCH stronger landing gear mounts so it can handle a lot more abuse (especially from bad and STOL landings on rough terrain)! It’s also the most convenient because we addressed two of the biggest complaints (yes guys, we DO listen to your feedback!)…there are new “combined connectors” to make installing/removing the wing easier, plus (and most importantly of all!!), the battery hatch is now ON THE TOP! The battery compartment is larger too and can fit up to a 4S 5000mAh battery now. BTW, our 4S 5000mAh batteries have IC5 connectors on them, but the ESC in the TT Evo has an IC3 on it because most 3S and 4S 2200-4000mAh batteries have the IC3 as well. So if you want to use an EC5/IC5 equipped battery you need to use an EC5/IC5 to 3 adapter…like one of these:

If you're using a Smart battery and want “full” Smart battery telemetry this adapter has the data/third wire: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...SPMXCA508.html

For all other batteries, these adapters do not have the date/third wire:

https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...EFLAEC510.html

https://www.horizonhobby.com/product.../DYNC0030.html

• All of the features of the original Timber are still included (slotted flaps, lights, optional-use leading edge slats, floats, etc.), along with the features of the Turbo Timber (3S and 4S compatible motor, metal-geared servos, stiffer wing). The changes noted above (top hatch, stronger gear mounts, combined connectors and Smart technology) are a big deal, and with those we believe the TT Evo will likely be sold in its current configuration for many, many years to come!

• Looks are subjective of course, but we think the new trim scheme looks fresh and more modern

Very excited about the top mounted battery hatch! There are a number of really great improvements on the Turbo Timber Evolution that really make this the best Timber yet. I will be back later with some details

On Monday I flew my TT and Draco back to back, it's amazing to me just how good both planes are, I am going to let my partner learn on my TT and if she stuffs it, buy the updated one, win-win!

Have you modified the motor mount? That was the weak point in my Turbo Timber. One bad strike and the irreplaceable mount broke requiring a new fuselage. Let’s see some photos with the cowl off.

Plus one for the way that the float struts/supports are painted(?) white instead of just leaving them as bare metal.

Yes! The top mounted battery hatch is the improvement many will notice and probably appreciate the most, but there are a number of other really great improvements and new features that make this the best Timber yet

Absolutely, there are upgrades all around the aircraft that really make this the best Timber yet. As one of the original Timber owners, it is clear that so much of the aircraft has been rethought and improved. Smarter, more durable, and more convenient.

It's amazing how much more convenient (and satisfying ) it is to swap between packs at the field with the hatch on top! Based on that, and the overwhelming feedback from everyone, we're pretty sure none of our future model designs will be "bottom feeders"

And so far the PNP version should be arriving right on the heels of the BNF Basic version around mid-July!

How about Horizon gets us an NX18 transmitter, and get some Spektrum receivers back in stock before they worry about another retread of the same ol thing?

Never heard of and aren't aware of any plans for an NX18 (nor have I ever seen or heard anyone else ask for one ), and we currently have lots of Spektrum receivers in stock (especially the most popular and best selling ones): https://www.horizonhobby.com/airplan...ems/receivers/

As for "retread of the same ol thing"....as noted in post #2 above (which doesn't note that we also release new transmitter and receiver models every few years too):

Cool!

The weak landing gear and servos have always been the Achille's heel for the timbers. Glad they're getting an upgrade. Any chance we can see a view of the updated gear design? I see it's longer but the weak point was inside where it connected to the x-brace.

Top loading bay is excellent. Would also love to see these 3 changes in the timber X.
