Covering a Goblin Wing?
I am getting very frustrated with this. I'm going on to my sixth time attempting to get a decent looking wing using the supplied tape. As per instructions, I used 3M spray (light) and lay the tape down with an 1/8th" overlap. It just doesn't have a very nice look to it when done. Too many wrinkles. Hit it with a heat gun, and the trailing edge will roll, and then I'm stripping it off, again! Do I have to just accept the wrinkled look or does anyone have another method to get a good looking wing? Maybe just monocoat-lite? I've even considered laying glass on the T/E to stiffen it up but the associative weight has stopped me from this approach. All suggestions and help are very much appreciated. TIA, Todd

Wrinkles
Wrinkles just show how old you plane is.... just kidding. spary on a light coat of the old 3M let dry then pull out the tape to the length you need and lay it on there! if you do get wrinkles just use you hot air gun on it lowest setting all you need is a little heat to tighten it up

Using an iron on the tape instead of the heat gun will give you more control of where the heat goes. Using the extra foam 'beds' to hold your wing while you apply the tape helps too.

They used to be made by TGWorks but they shut down production of this and another one they made. I know the recommendations to shrink the tape is normally a good one (I did so on a Zagi and love the result). However. The wing is EXTREMELY thin on the Goblin and any shrinking is going to deform that airfoil. I peeled my first Goblin tape job because it was all wrinkled. However, it was due to my not using the foam sections the cores came in and I was deforming the wing during the process. When I applied it using the core saddles, it came out much better. Dave |

Thanks for the suggestions, sorry I didn't respond sooner, out on a business trip. I'll try using the beds, but I think the reason for the T/E problems is because they are so thin and the tape is actually stronger so when it strinks it warps the T/E. I'll use an iron and see what I get. Thanks again! Todd
