I'm not quite seeing the point to it either, but clearly some people enjoy it enough to spend the time & money on it. No harm to it if that's their thing. Why, I hear tell that there's even people who like to fly airplanes that don't have engines or motors on them....

I had a light weight propane burner for backpacking, I often thought that if you hooked up a servo to the burner adjuster, you could make an RC hot air balloon. I see others thought the same thing! I could see where free flight with this would be fun, you would have to have longer burns to gain altitude over forests and rivers, then you could get it lower over fields. Chasing it would be interesting! But tethered? That would get boring pretty quick, and there are a lot of other things I would rather spend $3,000 on.

See my update on the main article on page 1. I added some info about how they use these. Most don't use tethers and they can control direction using various wind current at different altitudes, just like the manned balloons do. Cool stuff!

For those who don't get it, go up in a real balloon sometime. Pilots only have ascent and descent controls, and use the thermal and wind conditions as their control. "Flying the Box" in Albuquerque is a great example of this, and was pointed out, I can understand there being some real skill behind piloting these. Especially over any long distances.

And what SHOULD be banned are those stupid chinese lanterns. There's a real fire hazard. And Gender Reveal parties. Or just let them keep happening so ALL of california finally gets razed. :-)

Having had a few threads moved, I’m wondering what this propane powered balloon thread is doing in the “Electric Plane Talk” forum.

I put it here to bring awareness to this part of the hobby and directed people in the main post to the proper forum section where these types of discussions exist.
