Overview
AN A-10 MORE PILOTS CAN FLY
The E-flite® UMX™ A-10 Thunderbolt II Twin 30mm EDF ultra micro jet is the most practical and easiest to fly A-10 RC model yet! New upgrades make this replica of the iconic U.S. Air Force aircraft easier for a wider variety of experienced pilots to enjoy — including those with limited EDF experience. The BNF® Basic model’s industry-leading Spektrum™ 2.4GHz technology binds to your 5+ channel DSMX®/DSM2® transmitter for full 4-channel control, plus the benefits of exclusive AS3X® and optional-use SAFE® Select technologies. It’s 100% factory-assembled and ready to deliver an authentic A-10 jet flying experience almost immediately. The fully-molded airframe features a factory-applied “desert camo” trim scheme and is strengthened with a carbon fiber reinforced fuselage and nose. Factory-installed twin brushless power systems feature more powerful 2S and 3S-compatible outrunner motors with larger diameter 30mm fans, for improved vertical performance and speed compared to other models in its class — plus longer-than-average EDF flight times when using the recommended 450–850mAh LiPo batteries. Use the included fixed landing gear with steerable nose wheel to taxi, take off and land on paved or packed dirt surfaces. Or leave the landing gear off for more speed and vertical performance plus easy hand launches over and landings on grass. With the A-10 Thunderbolt II Twin 30mm EDF, you can start flying your first mission within minutes!
Exclusive Technologies This UMX™ A-10 is equipped with exclusive Spektrum™ AS3X®, SAFE® Select and telemetry technologies. AS3X works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence to deliver a locked-in feel that makes it seem like you're flying a much larger airplane. Optional-use SAFE Select offers pitch and bank angle limits along with automatic self-leveling that can be turned on and off at the flip of a switch to make this the easiest to fly Warthog ever! It will also provide real-time flight battery voltage and other telemetry data to Spektrum AirWare™ equipped transmitters (including the DX6e and 8e, DX6 G2/G3 and 8 G2, the DX9, the NX6, 8 and 10, the iX12, iX20 and others).
Higher Performance The factory-installed twin brushless power systems feature larger diameter 30mm fans with more powerful 2S and 3S-compatible outrunner motors. This upgraded power system setup delivers higher performance than the 28mm fans and 2S-compatible motors installed in previous UMX™ models to offer unmatched speed and vertical performance, plus longer-than-average EDF flight times when using the recommended 450–850mAh 30+C LiPo batteries with an IC2® connector (or JST connector plus a suitable IC2 to JST adapter, including SPMXCA322, sold separately).
More Durable The fully-molded and strengthened airframe includes a carbon fiber reinforced fuselage and nose. The result is a more durable model that looks great and is still lightweight to deliver the best possible flight experience!
Gear Options You can use the included fixed landing gear with steerable nose wheel to taxi, take off and land on smooth surfaces. Or you can leave the landing gear off for more speed and vertical performance plus easy hand launches over and landings on grass.
Fully Factory Assembled The A-10 Thunderbolt II Twin 30mm EDF arrives 100% factory-assembled and ready to fly right out of the box! It’s equipped with industry-leading Spektrum™ 2.4GHz technology that binds to your 5+ channel DSMX®/DSM2® equipped transmitter so you can be flying within minutes of opening the box.
Bind-N-Fly® Completion Level Advantage Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly® (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly, and fly!
This Bind-N-Fly Basic model is equipped with a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMX® receiver featuring AS3X® (Artificial Stabilization–3-aXis) technology that works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence so you enjoy a sense of stability and precision that makes it feel like you're flying a much larger, expertly tuned aircraft.
If this is your first model of its type, or you want an extra margin of safety while familiarizing yourself with the airplane, you can enable the optional-use SAFE® Select flight envelope protection technology built into the receiver. No programming is required.
With SAFE Select enabled, you get:
Pitch and Bank Angle Limits
Automatic Self-Leveling

My (personal!) thoughts and tips: The pole count of the motors is 8. This will need to be set in the “Smart ESC” menu under the “Telemetry” menu to show the motor RPM correctly in real time. And when looking at the telemetry screens while the motors are running at full power, you’ll notice it’s pulling upwards of 12-14 amps with 3S batteries! These 2S and 3S compatible twin 30mm EDF power systems were pushing JST connectors to the limit (and sometimes even causing them to fail on hot days when flying hard!) so that’s why we switched to the IC2 connector on this model (the original UMX A-10 and the UMX Citation have JSTs). The IC2 connector is all-new…it is NOT compatible with the old (but not common) EC2 connectors because it had to be made larger to fit the Smart wire lead/pin (unlike the IC3 and IC5 connectors that are directly compatible with their EC3 and EC5 counterparts). This means you will either need to use an IC2 to JST adapter (more info below) or the new 3S 850mAh 30C Smart G2 LiPo battery that comes with an IC2 connector on it: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...MX8503S30.html Which can be charged on Smart chargers using this IC3 to IC2 adapter/charge lead: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...SPMXCA320.html These batteries are not cheap, but they have very high quality cells, plus the G2 Smart chip and IC2 connector, so they do perform the absolute best…I was getting pretty much unlimited vertical for the whole flight with them! However, those who already own 2S or 3S 450-850mAh batteries with JST connectors on them (like batteries you may have used in the original UMX A-10, the UMX Citation, Blade 230 heli, etc.) can use them in the new UMX A-10. Either remove the IC2 and replace it with a JST connector, or buy this IC2 Battery to JST Device adapter separately: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...SPMXCA322.html Although the web site currently shows the adapter won’t be here until June (2021), we’re hoping to get them here as soon as the middle to end of April (2021) by shipping them via air freight instead of by ocean container (so they arrive around the time/right after the new UMX A-10s start shipping)! And here are the lower cost 3S and 2S batteries with JSTs on them we also recommend. I’ve flown them all and they all work great! The 3S batteries have about 10% less power than the 3S 850mAh Smart G2 batteries (likely due to the cells and/or the power loss of the JST connector), and the 2S battery works surprisingly well! The new UMX A-10 has less power with the 2S battery than the original version did (to leave headroom so it can also work with 3S batteries), but it will still loop from level flight and fly for 5+ minutes with 2S 800s. It’s also more manageable for less experienced pilots to fly because it’s not as fast or heavy: 1) Spektrum (non-Smart) 800mAh 3S 11.1V 50C LiPo with JST (Item No. SPMX8003SJ50) @ $19.99: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...X8003SJ50.html 2) Onyx 11.1V 800mAh 3S 30C LiPo Battery with JST (Item No. ONXP8003S30JST) @ $12.99: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...003S30JST.html 3) Onyx 7.4V 800mAh 2S 30C LiPo Battery with JST (Item No. ONXP8002S30JST) @ $8.99: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...002S30JST.html BTW, we’ll also be selling the IC2 connectors separately for those who want to install them on their own batteries, make their own adapters, charge leads, etc.: • Connector: IC2 Battery (Set of 5) (Item No. SPMXCA324): https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...SPMXCA324.html • Connector: IC2 Device (Set of 5) (Item No.SPMXCA325): https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...SPMXCA325.html Also, now that I’ve flown the new UMX A-10 quite a bit, here are my thoughts: • It’s definitely more fun to fly with 3S! But I really enjoyed it with 2S and recommend that for less experienced pilots (see more on that below though) or guys who don’t care about tons of speed/power and want to fly more “relaxed”. • It’s easier to fly now that it has SAFE Select (the original only had AS3X), and it's the easiest to fly A-10 model out there, but it’s NOT a good first EDF for many people (unless you have a lot of experience flying many other sizes/types of models...not just a trainer and maybe another airplane or two). It’s small and fast so it’s hard for some to see. It also doesn’t “float” so it can be harder for less experienced pilots to land. It’s a little bit more difficult to fly/land than the UMX Citation, the F-15 64mm, and Habu STS 70mm so I think it would be a good second or third EDF model after those for most people. • The fuselage/nose is stronger! It’s hard to see, but if you look inside the fuse there are pieces of carbon angled and supporting the nose right ahead of the leading edge of the wing (which weren’t there on the original). This is where most of them broke before. There’s also some extra tape along the seams of the nose that helps MUCH more than you might expect. I purposely cartwheeled it once on pavement and it didn’t break the nose off! The original would have been destroyed ![]() • The landing gear wires are MUCH stronger than they used to be so it’s much easier to taxi, takeoff and land on smooth surfaces than it was with the original! Also, most will probably need pliers to “pinch” the wires to remove the landing gear. • The Product Development guys recommend underhand launching with SAFE on...which will work well for most! That said, I’ve also found overhand launching to work well with the right technique. When I (hopefully!) get a chance to shoot a Flight Talk video in the coming weeks I will show and talk about the pluses and minuses of both methods. But I also (strongly!) recommend that most people fly from smooth surfaces with the gear installed (at least for their first few flights!) because hand launching and belly landings are not for everyone. It is noticeably faster and has more vertical with the gear removed though (plus it looks way cooler)! Video from TheRcSaylors: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheRcSaylors
