New "Kookem Pyro Light 400,000 BTU" Lithiums!

Here is a picture from this today at our field after a crash of a helicopter. 20 minuters later this started.

Anything will burn like that is you rub enough Sterno on it.

The 20 min delay is of interest..... was anything obviously going on with the pack between the crash and the ignition? Puffing? smoking? etc?

It was warm from the flight--it was sitting outside Marks truck --he was smart not to put it inside. No one was watching it wntil it started to hiss and smoke. It was carried out away from the cars by the wire leads and left to cook!

The brand does not really mean much--all Lithium Poly cells can flame if things go wrong.

In this case the Sterno is self contained in the cell and self igniting!

Battery Puffer
That would be my little campfire you see there. I was showing off with a little downwind dragrace with my raptor when a link somewhere popped off and the heli went in sideways. The pack was ejected but looked OK.A little crooked but no puffing or tears. I set the pack down and put my many pieces in the car. When I picked the pack up to put it in the car I noticed it was a little warm so I left it on my table to cool off. 15 minutes later it started hissing at me so I through it on the pavement just in time for it to start burning. It started at one end of the pack and took a good 5 minutes to burn its way to the other end.Scratch one 10s 2p

This report seems to follow crazy Teds comments that a bent/dented lipo is more dangerous than a torn open one.

Thanks for the info!

Have a go, it might work!
I guess the moral of the story is don't trust a "crashed" lipo pack. It might look OK externally but who knows what damage it has suffered internally. In future I'll definitely be putting any "crashed" pack out of harms way for an hour.

red

PS I'm glad it didn't ignite your model, car or house.
