Jetset44's F-15 as a nano edf

I built a few of jetset44 pusher jets now and built a few as micro fliers (F-15 and F-18), but still pushers. AUW of those little jets were ~5 ozs. I decided to try edf version with all buzz of the nano edf jets popping up. Here's my edf version:

Made from 3mm Depron
WS 16.5" (59% of original plans modified slightly to accept the height of the EDF40)
Feigao 5300kv in GWS EDF40
TP 860 3s
AUW 5.8 ozs
5.9 amps at static full throttle

Maidened this morning and like the pusher version it's a very stable and true flier. Buzzes around pretty well, loops tighly, roll rate is unreal. Not as much power at the pusher version but it gets up and goes. Thrust feels less than 1:1, maybe I need to cut some cheater holes to get it to go faster. Maybe I can shed 3/4 oz with a smaller pack like the Kokam 340's. I hope to get some video posted this weekend...

Sal,
Beautiful. Any guesses on performance with two fans?

Two fans would require a larger pack (something to handle 11-12 amps) which would probably defeat the purpose. Wing loading would increase and I think you'd need to upsize the design. The single fan is just about there, I think shedding some weight like going to a lighter pack would help.

Beautiful work, Sal! Is the whole model made from 3mm Depron? If so, did you add any strengthening at all to the stabilators or vertical tails?

Do you think a CD-ROM powered EDF-40 or EDF-55 would work in this ship as well?

cdr power!!

i've done a cdr on cox/estes fans as well as edf55 for a-10. here's my pseudo su27 with cdr ducted fan. due to su27 design and its lerx, it is a very stable plane.

Steve,

Thanks. Yes the whole model is made of 3mm. No additional strength is need for anything, you'd be surprised how strong it is. I used a Feigao so I'm sure a cd rom motor will work (maybe better). As far as using a EDF-55 you're talking about making the model bigger. I used your original design shrunk to 59% but added 1/4" to the height of the fuse to accomodate the EDF-40. Going to a 55 you'd need to upsize the plans to about 72% of original (I looked into this before construction) which puts you at the "pocket" size you designed. That said add the weight and the larger size (you may need to go to 6mm Depron) and it may not be feasible. I started out weighing the BL EDF-40 unit and comparing it to the Axi 2204 with a prop and it was basically the same, so I went ahead with the micro design. It came in ~.3 oz heavier, probably because of the duct pieces. It's such a stable flier you wouldn't believe...

Cool work Sal, on the EDF 40 with the feigao 28 or 25 turn, it needs the amps, if the bat wont hold the voltage then the performance will be low and might be even lower than the heavier version. Test the setup both electrical and mechanical(Mechanical being thrust force with nose against the scale) to compare the two.

Cheers,

Great explanation, Sal. Thanks!

Don't know when I'll get around to trying it, but I'm thinking a 77% F-15 with 6mm wings and stabs and 3mm fuselage and with an EDF-55 with CD-ROM on 3s 700s might make a good combination. I'll have to see what fits and calculate weight and thrust first...

Jetset44,

I have been flying a Nano Bandit scaled up by 1 1/2 times wing area arround 150in2 fly's good with the stock motor but lacks the top speed just to give you an idea of the potential.

Thanks, Eric. Do you mean EDF-55 with the stock motor? That sounds good, since a 77% F-15 park jet would have exactly 150 in2 wing area.

Yup, Id say maybe 45mph tops but dont tell anyone....
I really need to change the motor out to a BL that I have on hand just waiting till I find an adapter for it that is made for the EDF55.

That sounds like a good combo, I have your plan for the F-15 I suppose I could get it scalled to that size also, via Kinko's. Youve done a great job with the Parkjet series, I downloaded them for my sons but they have been busy with life now I might just make time to build them for me too. Definitely the F-14, even have 2 micros and Himax's for them. Fell in love with that jet when Top Gun came out...

Cheers,

Eric b.
