Rudder on wing?

Hey every one! I decided to do an experiment. I was thinkin some how to attach rudders to my wing.
Has any body tried this before? and if so, how did it work out?

I read some were that you can put them on the back of the winglet?

Any sugestions are appriciated.

I was thinking the same thing earlier!! But what sort of extra manuvering will rudders allow??

I suppose one rudder on each winglet means a servo for each winglet, hmmm, i'd very like to use just one. But That means we need to link the two rudders together. I'd very like to take this idea and try it, anyone else got any suggestions?

There has been some pretty extensive discussion/experiementation in early threads, you might want to do a search and see what comes up. In a nutshell, the extra complexity for very little gain in performance makes it pretty much not worth the effort.

Yeah, that is what i though CTF, but it is always fun to experiment and over complicate things.

Rudders that can float freely in one direction, and add lateral stiffness in the other direction have been tried successfully.
The rudder (actually a moving vertical fin out towards the tip) on the inboard wing when turning is held in place, while the fin on the outboard wing "slipstreams" and has no aerodynamic effect on the plane.
I believe Larry Klingberg came up with this idea.
There's nothing other than the axle the fin pivots on to add complexity.

I am just thinking like Rube Goldberg again, looking for ways to over complicate a simple 3 chanel wing. lol

I did this on a 32" balsa wing after reading about klingbergs.. it really did help with the traking it is like an auto yaw control the winglet is alowed to float outward freely and stoped so that it does not go past center inward. this will help staer the wing into the wind in a round about way..

Try it if you want to engineer something.. It does work..

Can any of you make a diagram of this?

Rudder on a wing

I've built a couple planks with rudder.
The secret is to get the rudder far as you can BEHIND the trailing edge of the wing. Rudder is very ineffective the closer you get to the center of gravity (shorter moment arm).

Here's a pic of my Plank 40 with rudder....and yes...it hovers well..

I have plans in visio/jpg and video capture of it as well...may post if I can find it.

Rudder is fun....adds a new twist on good designed flying wing.

As far as rudder on a swept wing (Zagi-like) I'd go with a carbon boom from the center and attach fin/rudder to that...eliminate tip fins (or reduce the size). Makes for easy central located rudder servo too...

Good Luck!
