Aero Club of Wavre Virtual Expo

Check out how this club created a virtual expo of model airplanes during the Civid pandemic.

Check out the Virtual Expo

The Aero Club of Wavre in Belgium organized their first exhibition of model airplanes back in 1980. Over the years this event, which is aimed at model airplane enthusiasts but is also open to the general public, has acquired growing notoriety and attracted visitors from all over the country and from abroad. Last year, for the 40th edition, was a great success with a large number of models on display.

The Wavre Expo has gradually become a must-see event and is eagerly awaited each year by many enthusiasts. People come to admire the many models on display, but also to find items for sale at the large swap meet on site. But mainly people come spend time with like minded enthusiasts. After 3 months during which the winter climate leaves few possibilities to fly the models and to meet friends in the field, all are happy to meet in a friendly and warm atmosphere in the village hall of the Town Hall of Wavre which has been welcoming them for so long. Thus, during the two days that the exhibition lasts many visitors show up.

In 2020, the Wavre Expo took place on February 1-2, when no one expected what was going to happen with a Pandemic. The Expo ended and the club had to reserve the dates for 2021 and they chose January 30 and 31.

Then Covid hit and the first stay at home orders arrived and it was necessary to adapt to the new rules. Protocols were established to allow safe practice and were well respected by members. Months go by but the pandemic does not really pass and in November, 3 months from the date chosen for the next Expo, it was obvious that it will not be able to take place. The members of the ACW, not being the type to give up, tried to find a formula allowing to organize the 41st Expo and not to interrupt this beautiful tradition. One of the club members came up with the idea of having a virtual Expo…

That's the story of how the 2021 Virtual Expo came to be. You can visit the virtual expo via Matterport below. The great thing about this is that it allows those of us from the US and other countries who could not attend the event in Belgium to view and see all the wonderful models on display.
