Lindberg PT 109-What's the best RC gear?

Planning to build the PT 109? What gear have you used? What gear do you recommend?

Big Boats Rule!

Your Lindy PT looks like it's plenty fast enough, and doesn't appear to be too heavy. Good job! Difficult with twin can motors.

If you add the spray rails to the hull chines your boat will be much drier. Faster, too.

Also, I found that there is a lot of flex in the deck, about halfway down the hatch opening. This was fixed with an angle brace made from some scrap plastic sheet about an inch or so wide. Also, I added a couple of deck beams, side to side, at the front and back of the hatch opening.

After those simple fixes, the Lindy PT is like a blank canvas to build what you want.

Thanks for the good advice! I shot, edited and posted the video but the PT 109 belongs to my friend Dan. My "Lindy" is still in the box. Besides the model, I have Trans, Rx and I bought 2 water cooled 35amp ESCs because I was planning on going brushless. I'd liked to use the prop setup he did but could not decide on motors. Kv and size? I'm also planning to shoot a build video to post YT.

I have mine set up for single motor/prop. Mine were originally powered by a geared Speed 400, but were just a tad bit slower than I would have liked. Using a 3000 mah 7 cell nimh pack it also weighed a bit more that I would like. I bought a brushless motor, but have not yet made the switch. I was planning to go with a 2500 mah 3S lipo. And I have the same esc.

I scratch built PT-188 in 1/32nd scale. I used ta pair of MACK Products #3150 motors and Octura X427 counter rotating props. MACK Products offers a power package kit for the Lindberg PT-109; MACK #813 CE includes two #3150 motors, universals, shafts, and props, along with a battery y-harness and ESC.

My PT-188 uses a single Futaba ESC and a single 3000 mAh 7.2V NiMh for a run time of about 30 minutes.

I have build a Lindberg PT-109 hull with a single screw. It works well, gives a good turn of speed ( Speed 600 ) and handles well. Other club members have done the same. With todays
brushless motors, I expect similar results. If you decide to use twin motors, counter rotating would be the way to go.

Your friend Dan's PT looks and runs great! Nice video also! Good luck with whatever you're choice winds up to be-send pictures-have fun!!

Good choice on outrunners -It never ceases to amaze me how motors as small as a stack of ten 50 cent coins can do the work of 3/4 lbs of brushed motors at a fraction of the weight! Don't go overboard on the size of the brushless motors-almost everybody picks BL motors that are way too big. The rule of thumb is use motors whose can diameter is about the same as the props . And you probably not have to worry about cooling!

I am opting for a jet motor, as thats what they were built/designed to use. . Hope to post some progress.

PT boats of WWII did not use jet drives. The angle of the transom on the Lindberg 109 will not allow for an easy install of the jet. They like a 90 degree angle. Easiest solution is a direct drive single like MANY have done before. Vietnam patrol boats did use jets for operation on rivers.

BOB- I think the thing that everyone forgets about is that the power system comes with a fully proportional, forward and reverse, speed control which allows for low speed maneuvering and reverse capabilities rather than FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!!

Frank, I'm dusting my PT off. It was powered with the original Lindberg power set up that was available for it, with two RS550s and a manual speed controller. I ran it from two car NICAD battery packs. Would it be possible to post a picture of the interior of your boat with the MACK set up in it? Much appreciated.

I have a question sorta related to RC gear for the Lindy 109, anyone know where to get better detailed deck armament? Those that come with the kit is somewhat lacking. I wouldn't mind CAD files that can be 3D printed too.
