Engine choices for Excelleron 90


I'm about to receive my Excelleron 90 and still have to choose a powerplant.

What engine (brand, 2 or 4 stroke) do yuo use or would use on this plane?

FWIW-I have a YS 120 in mine...overpowered but it won't need another engine as I progress. I think an OS 1.20 would be a nice match.

I have been looking at the MVVS 2 stroke engines. Nobody seems to have a bad word about them and the cost is pretty reasonable. I like the possibility to set them up as rear exhaust engines too.

excelleron 90 engine choice


i am thinking of using an OS1.20 with a pump... i hear it is a heavy motor (33 ounces or so) so would i have to relocated servos to the tail of the plane to make up for the extra nose weight? some ARFs are tail heavy to start with... what is the general consensus of this powerplant to be used in E 90?

MVVS could be a nice answer... In case you choose the .90 I reccomend you put a tuned pipe on it. I had a 77 and worked very well (no complains) spining a 13x8 or 14x6 at alsmos 11500 rpm. Now I've a GMS 120 which weigths 750 gr w/o muffler spining a 16x8 on a panther (check the other thread).
Also seems that any 4St 120 could be a good answer too.

I have YS DZ 1.40 in it unlimited verticle at 1/2 throttle.I placed my battery pack just behind the wing.Had to add 2 oz. lead to' the tail.A bit heavy for super slow landings,but overall flies great.Its a bit over powered Talk about the need of throttle management LOL.A 1.20 would be better suited for it.I also put a .91 2c in it moved battery all the way forward removed the lead.Flies nice goes verticle but doesn
t speck out like the it does w/1.40.but lands so slow & gently .

Excelleron 90 and DLE 20cc?


Has anyone had any experience flying the excelleron 90 with a DLE-20Cc gas engine?

Would anyone recommend this combination?

Wow, not often you see a thread revived after ten years of no posts, lol. I think the DLE20 might be a bit heavy but cannot say for sure. Did not have the 90 size Excelleron...I had the 50 size with a OS70 four stroke in it that was perfect. I miss that plane very much. It expired too young due to elevator servo failure. Good luck no matter what you put in your bigger version...it is just a fine flying airframe.

YS 61 Long Stroke was my engine of choice. Of course that was 25 years ago.

Can someone please guide me in which Electric Motor could me most suitable for the Excelleron 90? I know nothing about electric motors, I come from a long history of Nitro flying.

Or do you guys suggest still go for nitro?

Any of the 110 size outrunners and 6 cell setups should work well.

Thanks everybody for the replies and advice in choosing the powerplant for the Excelleron 90!

If you had to choose between:
- ASP .91 Red Head with Stock muffler
- Electric motor
- DLE 20 gas engine
- Rossi .91 Rear Exhaust with tuned pipe

What would you choose?
