Elmira Relaunch Day
Hi Everyone,
Elmira was relaunched this morning. The weather called for small craft warnings and a chilly 54 degrees. When we first arrived at our local lake, the winds were blowing a good 15 mph from the West and the chilly conditions proved accurate. By the time Elmira was set up at lakeside, the winds had subsided and the sun was starting to come out. It turned out to be a great day for model boating. Her batteries were slipped into the hull and her radio was checked. At 39 pounds of joy, she was loaded into her launching dolly and gently placed in the lake. The ballast session in the Domestic Test Tank Facility had brought her down to her waterline and she sat nicely at the lake as well. I advanced the throttle and she gently took off. The winds would blow every once in a while and she would lean away from the gust, but like a "Weeble", she would only go so far and would bring herself back up and stand tall against the pressure. With her new (to me) big Pittman motor, her top end would take her to hull speed and she would create a pretty good sized bow wave. She might be just a little slower than when she had an Astro Geared 25 for power, but she was more stable in that she wasn't trying to rise over her own bow wave. She still has plenty of power and handles really well, just like she used to. After about 40 minutes of run time, I checked her for water in the hull and found none. I did find out later that the back end of the cabin lip does have a leak at the deck. When I was taking her out of the water, the dolly wheels got caught on the lake edge and I had to put her back down again. The wave between the boat and the lake edge washed over the deck and I found some water inside the boat, but none on the radio tray. This tells me that the water inside did not pass over the top of the cabin lip to get inside. Once home, I poured some water on the rudder cover and no leaks were found. I did find that that there was a crack at the back end of the cabin lip at the deck edge. That should fix pretty easily with some clear caulking. Overall, the rebuild of Elmira has brought her into more modern times with her modern speed control, new wiring, and fresh batteries. I think her fit and finish is also better now, that she has a completed interior and more interesting rigging on her tow mast. Hopefully, she will be good-to-go for the next 24 years. Thanks for coming along on this journey. All photos by Lin and Poppy. Take care, Bob SF ImagesView all Images in thread

Mohawk Home Utility Mat (Boat Stand Padding)
Hi Mark, Steve, and Ed....thank you.
Hi Everyone, Just in case anyone else is having trouble finding indoor/outdoor carpet for their boat stand.... I moved on to Plan B to get the boat stand done. None of my local stores are carrying indoor/outdoor carpet on the roll anymore. At my local Lowes store, I did find a door mat that translates really nicely to boat stand padding. It is manufactured by Mohawk Home Utility Mats (Commercial and Residential Mat). The color is Charcoal, and it has a non-skid rubber backing and a soft carpet surface. The mat is 24x36 and it cuts easily with a model knife. The price was $8.49. A couple strips of mat were cut off and glued to the boat stand with clear adhesive caulking. The carpet pieces were taped down with blue painter's tape while the glue set up. The ends of the verticals received a staple where the boat would never touch down. I made sure there was no glue showing and then put the boat on the stand to help hold the carpet in place while the glue dried. I think this will work pretty well. I think it is time to call this one done. Take care and happy boating. Bob SF |

Next Project
Hi Tim, Thank you.
I have a unfinished hull for a 95' CG Cutter that needs to be finished. That will probably be my next build. Bob SF |

Deck Seam Fixed
Hi Everyone,
Just a quick update on Elmira. After caulking the seam at the cabin lip, Elmira went out for Sea Trials 2 today and no leaks to report. It was a really nice day for photography, as the fog was pretty heavy and the glare was minimal. Here is a photo from today. Bob SF |
