I used Testors spray-can paints on that TS-II. It turned out nice, but cost a small fortune and stank like crazy. I'm not doing that again!

it now six months since your post, and I have to admit you made a correct assumption on the growing hangar :

Scratchbuild 350gr Sopwith Camel foamie (flown, but under repair now)

Multiplex Easystar 1 (modded during build to an "EasyTwin" FPV platform)
Multiplex FunJet (just ordered)

I have started flying FPV, and the TS2, the EasyStar2, and the EasyTwin have all been skyhigh on goggles. The ES2 even went truogh the clouds.

You were right - it's a truly addictive hobby And this is a great forum to share the fun with!

Unfortunately, retired my twinstar II.
Nothing wrong with it, just for me right now it is all about fpv and the twinstar isn't built for it.
Switched to a skywalker and have to say that it is a much better plane for the task.
Can fly at 5 amps and hold large batteries.
Still enjoy the times on my twinstar though.

Perhaps you need to seriously consider :

#1. Dynam Catalina (Highly recommended)
#2. EFlite Beaver
#3. Skywalker for FPV as already suggested.
#4. Tiger Moth ( I've a good plan for it)
#5 Spitfire (Kyosho E50)
#6. Islander (I like it since it can punch through fairly strong wind)

That's enough to get on with

hehe - thanks for the suggestions. I could say "I am not going fill anymore planes into my hangar right now", but I won't

Actually, I did look closely at the Skywalker, but I think that will only come into play when my FPV set-up becomes a bit more refined.

Shadrack, which wingspan did you choose? And what is your AUW?

OK, back to topic. I don't think I'll ever retire my TwinStar. It was my first plane, and I still love to fly it low, slow, and scale like

1680, AUW with 6000 3S, Gopro hero 2, 600 line rmrc cam with pan and tilt, O.S. Orb 1200kv, eflite 60A esc, cc 10A bec, FY31 AP, immersion rc uhf diversity receiver with 2 x sander style antenna, 600mW vTx 5.8 Ghz, strapping tape on the bottom of the wings though I have the ones that have the extra CF rod.
2.1 Kg.
Cruise at about 6 amps or less.

First off, loved my twinstar.
Tried to get it to be my FPV platform.
Biggest problem was packing everything in the small space available.
Interference, heat, etc. Plus the battery limitations.
Then there was the issue with 2 motors and the power needed. I could never get a cruise at less than 9 amps that I trusted. Cruise speed also was higher, as was stall speed.
With the SW, you have something built for fpv.
I cruise at 6 amps. Can glide at a lot less, and no heat issues, interference, and could easily hold 12000 mA of battery.
Sure lowered my heart rate and made fpv really enjoyable.
I find I trust the platform.

Yes. The wing is held down by two nylon bolts that screw into captive nuts in the fuselage. It comes off without too much trouble.

Once off the model, the wing is also designed to separate into two halves easily. The two halves slide together over a tube that acts as the main wing spar.

That's what Multiplex intended with the stock brushed motor power system. But things get a little more complicated if you convert to brushless power. If you put the model together the obvious way, you have six motor wires and two servo leads leaving the wings and having to enter the body. All of them have to be disconnected each time you remove the wing.

That higher cruise speed was probably the main reason why the TS-II needed more power to stay in the air.

Back in the 1970's, a bunch of misfit MIT graduate students solved the problem of how to design an aircraft that would fly using the tiny amount of power a human pilot could put out. Their brilliant solution was based on the one thing everybody before them had missed: the slower you fly, the less power you need to fly. Rather than try to build an ultra-streamlined aircraft (everybody else had been trying to do this, and failing), they built an aircraft that was crude and draggy, but absurdly light with huge wings, so that it flew at a walking pace.

In fact it takes eight times as much power to fly twice as fast, all else being the same. (Four times as much drag force, multiplied by twice the velocity, equals eight times as much power). That's why just about any production car sold today can reach 100 mph, but only a tiny handful of supercars can reach 200 mph (twice the speed).
