No. This one looks so cool the way it is I wanted to keep it clean. I wasn't even going to put flag on it except all the colors match. Video doesn't quite capture how good it looks in the air. Right now I am so happy with it that I cut a deal to send my V1 to a new home, which I never dreamed would happen. That was my dream plane, but I think the new one has already taken over that role .

I still haven't gotten to fly it in good weather, so it's probably only 99% dialed in. I need a nice, calm day to turn the trim sensitivity down and make some full field passes to get super locked in. So far it's just been gusty, crappy weather with this plane, so I can't wait to fly her in reasonable conditions.

I think we are right at slightly ahead of neutral, which seems to be where mine usually end up. I started at neutral, but wanted it to track a little better. I think I won't know for sure until I can get her out in less than 15mph wind. You can see in the video I was up against some bad conditions, but the plane was still really good.

We are probably approaching the point that everything in the power system and servos is seated in, hinges loosened up a bit, everything flexed a few times, and the package is generally worn in and some of the newness scrubbed off. It's already really, really good, but I expect it's going to get better and better as things break in, I get closer on optimizing the set up, gaining confidence and hopefully getting some calm air.

Hey Doc, where'd you end up on throws on your MXS for the elevator?

I decided to get one in red in addition to the Gamebird. The tail authority is awesome, but I can't quite get comfortable on pitch. It seems very pitch sensitive to me, even when a little nose heavy.

Start with 45-50 degrees on your elevator for high rates. Try 65% expo on this rate, will smooth things right out.

Thank you for the response. I did follow the manual but used the 'ole Mark I eyeball for the rates. I'll buy a gauge and see where I'm really at.

I have low, 3D (approx. 45 degrees) and "as much as I can get w/o binding" on the elevator. Started with 65% expo on 3D rates, but still seemed pitchy to me so moved to 75%, but didn't notice much difference.

45 degree upline test has it gradually descending and balances around the wing tube so I don't think it's CG, but I've been wrong before with the Edge.

In a pinch, print this out and cut it out with scissors for a 45 degree gauge:

My word - that is a rocket ship.

Also Doc that thing is so planted particularly when you take into account the weather- Do you reckon that is plane or Gyro?

Excellent work as always.

The plane certainly plays it's part. Even my V1 was pretty amazing.

All of my Extreme Flight planes were fine in rough conditions without a gyro, but they are all better with it. It's just become another tool for extracting everything you can from the package. The way mine is set up, it works it's magic in the background and allows me to forget about it and just fly the plane. So, as a result, I don't put much thought into the gyro and I don't let rough conditions scare me off.

I think the video is a good demonstration how the Aura gives you the stability for those kind of conditions. It was howling that day and we still got a decent video because the wind effects the plane so little.

Doc,

I was blown away with how planted the plane was! Definitely food for thought.

All the Best

Danny

P.S - I just re-watched it - I'm totally gobsmacked!

You can see early on I hit a big pocket of big air that almost sucks the plane into the ground. Still, the yaw and roll stayed stable. Even the pitch stayed stable even if the altitude didn't. It was a really big moment, and I probably would have crashed without the Aura. If you want to try one, I'll send you my config file.

I still haven't flown this plane is good conditions, so I'm still not completely on top of it. It's stupid to destroy something this nice by going gonzo in 20 mph winds, so I'm leaving a huge margin. There's much, much more performance to come as soon as I can fly her some more, in sane conditions, that is. I want to get out at least a couple of smokin' videos, so she'll be back soon.

I'm also a little intimidated by the plane because it's so nice and the MXS has always been a special plane for me. I'm really trying to take care of it. This is probably the nicest plane I've ever owned, The quality level on all the EXPs is just bonkers. The build was really clean. Part of this was taking my time, but this plane was so nice that just made it even more enjoyable.

Conditions were a little better for this one.

I put an Aura in my new MXS. While I'm still adjusting to the feel of the Aura, I'll comment that the MXS really benefits. Subjectively, it seems to be more stable in harrier than my smaller 48" Edge, which has a gyro, but not the Aura. Some of that is related to the different stick priority settings between the two though, I think. I've yet to play with the options in both to any significant degree.

The planes alone are fantastic. The gyro just helps you push it to the next level. I turn mine on, forget about it and simply fly the plane.

The trap you don't want to fall into is having multiple modes and adjustments. Flying the plane is hard enough, but having to remember which gain is on what switch, or knob, or different gains and stick priorities is just more work and more to remember, and just one more thing for the pilot to get wrong. Mine just works the magic behind the scenes. The plane is just more stable, and that's what we are always fighting to achieve anyway.

I've seen guys flipping switches and cranking knobs, and they are too busy to really get with flying the plane. I think my way is better, at lest for me, but it's about that plane and not all the bells and whistles. of course, but that's only what works for me. Twice I have crashed planes because I forgot what rate I was on, so I am better off with less to remember.

I run one gain of 10 on everything, and there's no danger it's every going to get gyro shake. To get rid of the stability at big stick movements (like say, tumbles when you want less stability) I run my stick priorities at 40a/25e/50r. Stability is really solid and the gyro never fights me. It's almost like the gyro isn't even there except for the stability.

One unnoticed benefit of the Aura is you can get it with your plane directly from Extreme Flight and only pay postage on one package. Sure, it's only a few dollars to ship an Aura, but even a few dollars is a lot of money now days.

I'm also working on an Aura tutorial, but I need to capture some screen shots. Anyone know how to do that?

Hi Doc,

In the first instance you can try the Print Screen button (or Ctrl/Print Screen) and then paste the captured image into Paint.

See if this gives you what you want.

Otherwise there are some more sophisticated screen capture apps on the web.
