Fixler ... a 3D printed fuselage for your Bixler wings

Hi guys ... how many of you guys (like me) have a set of Bixler Mk2 wings and no fuselage ?

Its been crashed so many times the fuselage is no longer reparable but the wings are fine

I might have a fix for you .. "Fixler" .. a 3D printed fuselage .. I am just testing it and if it turns out OK, I will have the G-Codes and STL files available for sale for you to print your own

I am using (and would recommend) LW-PLA .. its much lighter and more durable than PLA or PET-G

Lockey

NOW AVAILABLE ...

Files are now ready and available here ... https://www.lockeysrcplans.com/produ...ixler-fuselage

Also on Cults .. https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/vari...bixler-2-wings

Lockey,
Bravo !

You are really hitting into your stride!

Great work on this one.

I have a Multiplex Easy Star and the Easy Glider too - both similar to the Bixlr in many ways.

The LW-PLA is perfect for this application too.

I might the to reserve some Printer time for this one !!!\

This one is going to be a real winner!

So , Now that you are into the warm season ,
GET OUT THERE and Fly that thing a BUNCH !

Best

Thanks Bob .. you know it flew so well, I think it might even be OK made from PLA+ ( more colours and cheaper to print) I will give it a try I think ... might have to just lengthen the nose a little to compensate for the extra tail weight

I just have to tweak the drawings and files a bit and it will be ready

Later I will post all the build photos and maybe make a build video

By the way .. I used my new "slip lock" joint system too, so if one section gets damaged you only have to reprint that section and swap it over .. this one is in 3 sections

That's incredible! Makes me want to go out and buy a pair of Bixler wings. You are really advancing the state of this hobby.

I decided I would test print the modified parts with PLA + this time, to see what the weight is like and check out the files

I thought I would mix and match some colours (can't do that with LW-PLA) so ... just because I can .. haha

I made a video of the build (putting the parts together) I will post when its edited and sent to YouTube

Great work Tony

Now all you have to do is fit a set of wide undercarriage and a mast with rotor head and you have an Autogyro

I will get you to do another Autogyro one day

Tony sent me a trial piece for the Fixler. Wow is all I can say. I'm currently printing a seaplane which is proving very difficult to print without large gaps (in a seaplane ), and another well known online seller which is going well, but not as good as this print. I've done the piece in std PLA, it's strong, light and smooth. Clevery designed for strength.
Well done Lockey, masterful.

(I don't have spare Bix wings but ordered them there tonight after printing!)

Super slick. Can you also do a video on how to keep a workshop tidy . You could instantly find the screws that you needed and you put the stuff back after . Hmmm

Thanks Luke

Here is part 4 and Part 5 .. and its now ready for the maiden

Weight before battery 843 grams for the PLA+ .. against 709 grams for the LW-PLA .. I was surprised it was only 134 grams difference .. it has a 30mm longer nose too

I used 6mm Depron for the tail parts

The PLA+ one .. flying weight is 1010 grams (thats just a tad over 1 kg) with a 2200/2s battery .. I am using the same motor as the LW-PLA one .. Turnigy D2826-10 1400kv

As soon as I fly this beasty I will organise the files .

I will supply G-Code files to print directly to your printer for both PLA and LW-PLA and also STL files for the guys who would prefer to slice the parts themselves

I print only ABS so STL will be fine.

I have a small problem.. after the flight with both models .. I fund that the motors were moving around ..

It seems that the heat from the motors had softened the plastic motor pod and was allowing the motor to move .. maybe thats what the noise was when I took off with Fixler 1

Fixler 2 seemed OK but when I landed I checked it and found it was the same

Not sure what the answer is ?? make from PET-G or ABS ? ... Put a ply sandwich each side of the mount area ? any ides guys ??

Tony ABS mount and cooling duct like the BD5 might do it.
Or a ply firewall between the motor and plastic, isolate the motor screws from the plastic.

Yes Joe, thats sort of .. what I was thinking .. I have cooling through a hole in the motor tower and holes in the back of the motor mount for through cooling .. see pic
