Build Log

4F-51 Fat, Flat, Floppy, Foamy

Been playing with cartoon scale again, and wanted to do a tail-less plane for a while... So why not?

Plenty of wing area! Plenty of Power!

Used EPP sheets from, and a 18"x1/8" c/f tube for a spar, but FF or Depron would work fine (Just reduce the wing slot accordingly).

24x 12 wing + 4" elevons
384 sqin
6.5-7 oz
2.7 oz/sqin
15t CDR, 8x4HD prop
2s830, 7.6a, 53w
9.7oz thrust, 29mph
4 channel, elevon, rudder

I love the way it flies. Much easier to fly than my IFO! Looks to be a torque-roll monster. I haven't had any still air, but early attempts show a lot of promise.

No reason we couldn't do all kinds of profiles in this fashion!

Here's a video:

(Pictures show early elevons, they are 2x as wide now )

Oops, added the full size, non-tiled pdf's...

Edit, for search engine? 4f51, fat flat floppy foamie, mustang,
Edit: Added GPW's XP-39 files
Edit: added full size E w/ grid

No video yet, maybe tomorrow.

You can sorta see all 3 servos. I set them where I thought it would want to balance, which BTW seems like a pretty wide area for battery placement.

Right now I'm flying it with a cg at 3.75" behind the LE at the root. I'm sure that's nose heavy (23%), but it seems to handle it fine in the wind.

Very nice! Would it fly without the rudder - with elevons only? I'd like to make an Air Cobra, then a P51D, then a Spitfire, then a . . .

Like I said, it should work with 3 channel, elevons only, just need to shorten the tail. I'll work on it in the morning

Glen: 15t can fit 24g no problem. Even at 26g, the 8x4 is where it's at. Just check the temp every now and then.

Yup, FanFold should work fine... Still would be 4F (Fat, Flat, FanFold )

It's about the same weight as the EPP (11/32") I used. I just knew I was going to be bouncing it a lot!

This has got to be the Coolest Looking P-51 on e-zone
What about a P-40, Hell Cat, P-47, or a Air Cobra. Thanks
for the plans

I've updated the drawings to include the 3 channel 'squarshed' fuse for elevon only. Hope someone gives me some feedback!

Yea, Six, there's no reason why they can't be done in the same style... Just gotta do it. Maybe a Zero first, for some dogfighting?
