My next Microfan kit release - what will it be?

Hi guys, it seems the EDF market is splitting into big & small, just like the rest of the R/C world. Bigger EDF's are becoming more affordable and small EDF's, thanks to lipos, have become much more practical. There's been a recent surge of interest in my Panther, so I thought I'd explore the possibilites of doing another microfan size EDF. I'd love to do an F104, but Steve/EAM have one coming out sometime (when??? seems like it's taking forever!). Because of the small size of these planes, I feel that a kit should come in under $150US. This means that it must be cheap to manufacture (in labour terms) and quick to develop & prototype. As a result, the list of possibilites gets shortened somewhat. I don't want to produce a kit with lots of extra bits & pieces that need their own moulds. Ducting should be rollable from sheet or easily vacformed. I want to make something that will fly as well as my Panther does, and draw as much attention at the field. Here's a list of posibilities in no particular order:

1. Mig21
2. Hunter
3. A4 Skyhawk
4. Mig 17
5. Mig 19
6. De Haviland Venom
7. Me P1101
8. F100 Super Sabre

The Hunter and Venom could possibly use the ducting from the Panther, so that helps a bit. With the exception of the A4 the others all use rolled ducting, so that's a bonus. I'd like to hear what people may be interested in seeing. I'm not gonna make a glass masterpiece like my minifan F104 - just not worth it, panel lines on a plane this size would be invisible, anyway. The intention is to have something I can prototype in a couple of weeks and have in production within one month. Vote away, guys!

What we need is a larger selection of 90+mm!

Stu, how about a 90-120mm Mig 15. There are non out there. Spring airs, flaps and speed boards!

A Hunter would do too

For a lot of people like me right now the small planes are the only thing I can store without driving teh wife crazy. We live in a 1 bedroom appartment and there is no room for any of the things that would support a shop nor a storing larger models of any sort and that is the only reason I delve into the small models.

Greg, I'm working on them too! Howver, they need to be masterpieces so the development time is much greater. As I'm still unemployed (since July!), and my short (6 month) stint as a UAV designer has gone unpaid (I'll be warning the R/C world about these snakes when the court case is over!), I need something quick to get funds in to aid with development of the big ones. I have a Mig17 designed for midi and my own big fan, as well as a Hunter and F104 - they'll get done later this year.

Bob - cool!

Eric - I think your situation is typical of a large share of the electric flight market, and I think it's time we got some decent quality products out there instead of the disposable foam ones.

No probs, if you like more than one, just post a reply to let me know (or get someone else to vote for you!)

I vote for the Hawker Hunter.

Its side-intakes allow for a more conventional servo lay-out in the nose, and its mid-wing design reduces the chances of catching a wingtip during belly landings.

Hi Stu,

I am all for it. I am putting away some funds right now for Graham Reddins kit for the Microfan, will need a more powerful setup but such is the life. If you go wood I am all for that to as I like to build things in wood.

I think both RBC (balsa kit) and EAM (FG kit) are coming out with Super Sabre's soon. My vote is the Venom or A-4....

Hi Stu,

If you are looking to raise funds then good quality fans comparable but more afordable than the schubi's would do the trick....

You would sell a ton of those.

Good luck, Mickyee
