My new DIY winch and retriever

I have wanted a winch for a long time but most of the people I know who have winches generally do not use them because of the effort to carry and setup for short sessions. High-starts are ok but the enthusiasm wears off quickly with retrieving and crosswinds. I have electric powered sailplanes but there is something special about DLG's and winch/highstart sailplanes. I enjoy the pure and simple aspects of a non electric sailplane. I am not a competition flyer and primarily fly woodies in the 2M and under range so the traditional Ford starter motor winch is both overkill and cumbersome. So here is a quick preview of what I have come up with. Preliminary calculations and testing shows that it is quite capable of launching small Park Flyers and larger sailplanes so I will post additional photos and videos if there is any interest.

My design considerations
- Ability to launch Woodies and smaller gliders with out folding wings for beginners.
- Should be quick to setup like a high-start.
- Easy to operate so I would be inclined to use it when my time is limited.

It is based on a 24V electric scooter motor and two 12V 9A batteries in series to provide 24 volts. The winch weighs 15lbs and the retriever 32lbs including the batteries.

- Winch - 24V 300 Watt MY1016 motor
- Retriever - 24V 100 Watt MY6812 motor
- 30A speed controller

The inspiration came from Allen Moore (YouTube) and mdennis (RCGroups).

Very interesting. Where did you get the winch spool?

The spool was made in three pieces plus the mounting hub for the motor. I have listed the parts below. The v-groove for the spool belt break was created by using an aluminum alternator pulley. My small lathe would not allow me to turn one so I improvised. It is very solid and has no twist or movement what so ever. Sorry no pictures of it unassembled.

Field Testing

Well I have done some initial testing and field trials. The winch needed nothing and worked flawlessly. We were able to launch a Gently Lady and an Aegea Mantis. No big zoom with the Mantis launch but that is not the purpose for the winch. I could not be more pleased with the ease of setup and performance. The batteries did not discharge at all so there is no concern about the power being shared for both the winch and retriever. The variable speed works well for different models and also for winding the line up at the end of the day. The retriever needs some tweaking but is close to being finished.

Being that the retriever is a direct drive motor there is not enough friction in the system to allow for the magnetic bail to stay in position for launching and release. I will be adding a pull solenoid to release the bail. It also will simplify the retriever reset as it is spring loaded and will automatically lock into position when the bail is raised. Pics to follow once assembled.

Mods:
- One way bearing to prevent backlash.
- Adding a solenoid for the bail release.

Updates to follow...

Updates are now complete

Its been a long project and I am waiting hoping for some warmer weather to finally get out and use it. Bench testing is complete and now its time to fly! I have a Willy Nillies Gentle Lady 250 48.5" and a J&H Aerospace Micro Bird of Time 48" on the bench being finished and being able to use the speed control to adjust the spool speed will be great. One winch for all of the various sailplanes.

The updates I have added are:
- A one way bearing to prevent line backlash.
- A solenoid for one handed bail operation.
- A switch to isolate the speed control and run direct from the 24V battery.
This was done so that there are no power losses from the speed controller when launching larger sailplanes.
