TALES Electric Sailplane ContestFun Contest Format
After completing my review of the Alpha 2M sailplane which you can see here, it felt like a good time to highlight the TALES event format. The Alpha is a perfect airplane for TALES and while I have yet to fly at a TALES event, it's something I look forward to trying.
TALES got its start at the end of 2016 when the guys at the Greater Detroit Soaring and Hiking Society came up with the idea and started experimenting with it at a few contests in 2017. Jack Lafret was the main person working on the rules and he held a TALES demo at the Nats in 2019. I was there for that demo, but didn't have a suitable plane to fly. It was interesting as it blends ALES standardized launch altitudes with F3K type multi task events. I know we all enjoy the challenge of low altitude thermaling and the 10 minute format of F5J, but I can tell you as a K guy that flying multiple tasks during a contest is a blast as well. Keeping the planes limited to 80" in wingspan means the planes can be very affordable and approachable to anyone. F5K has started to grow in popularity and there are a lot 1.5M size electric planes coming out. The cool thing about that is you could fly both F5K and TALES events with the same plane. If your club hasn't given TALES a try yet, what are you waiting for? Everything you need can be found right here. I'll post a link to the rules along with the FREE scoring program below. Check out the video as well to get a feel for how the contest format works.

Thanks for the write up. Just FYI, the rules has evolved since we started flying it back in 2017. So when Roger stated that landing points don't count in the video it was correct at the time, now they do. Just check the rules for the latest version.

TALES final contest of the year
Hi,
We just had our final TALES of the year. Today we had our first ever "All in" call in Poker (10minute flight in 11minute window). Congratulations to Sean Fidler for making such a bold call and winning the contest! Anyone else out there interesed in TALES ? I think its a great format for those looking for the excitment of F3K, but with a common launch height, and potentional for greater affordability compared to F3K. |

Re Aust ERES rule:.
We did our best to adopt as much of the Euro 2m RES rules as possible (almost all wood) , but without banning Radians or existing models used in our long standing Millennium Cup 2m RE series (which allows unlimited construction, but includes a lot of old models with molded fibreglass fuselage pods and foam wings skinned with timber.) We decided that there was no performance gain from a purchased molded pod (even carbon) as balsa is lighter anyway, so no need to ban them. So we just banned vac bagged or molded flying surfaces. This year most events in both classes have been dominated by all wood Euro style models or Radians. Our first Sydney event since our 4 month 2021 lockdown was Millennium Cup two weeks ago with an excellent 27 entries. No ERES until late January. We are getting better numbers for 2m events than for F5J. |

Because I was asked. The ERES rule is the only new event and where the reference to molded pods appears.

Got me thinking of another mashup idea. How about RESTALES? TALESRES? TALES-RES. TALES format, but all the model requirements (wooden only, RES only). of E-RES? |
