Discrete receivers

For anything I'm likely to fly further than 1s whoops I have switched to discrete receivers now. A simple $12 frsky XM receiver will give you more range than the video link will allow. I'm a bit of a sucker for making things light weight but I think 0.8g is well spent on a decent receiver.

I agree. I'm planning on adding an R-XSR on mine. The VTX can do 200MW, so I highly recommend upgrading the reciever on this. 0.8g is not going to change the thrust to weight ratio much for this quad and the only time I would recommend a SPI receiver is on an ultralight 1s whoop or something for indoors only.

I was out flying earlier today and my wife commented on how just how powerful and quiet the Crux3 is compared to my other micros. I cannot recommend this quad enough and I'm glad I went with 2s as opposed to 1s 3" since it can handle voltage sag better and is super efficient.

Nice video Don! It's great to hear the amount of noise each quad makes.

I have a XM Plus receiver lying around but I've never installed one before. Anybody know if there's any issues with disabling the stock spi for the XM?

I'm running an XM plus in mine:

Just make sure you use the inverted rx pad (SBUS) as you'd usually do on a F4 board and change the receiver to serial on the UART you are using. Same as a normal discrete receiver.

Has anyone tried the crux3 with lion 18650 batteries? I am not sure to choose between 1s or 2s. Drone weights 45gr and each battery is 46g.

Crux3 doesn't have enough KV for 1S.
Voltage even lower on 18650.
2S 18650 = 95g battery should work.

On 2S, about 120g per motor.. 100g because lower voltage. 400g thrust total. 40+95=135g.. 3:1

In general, thrust:weight for motors goes down as they get smaller. Same fixed weight for base and shaft etc.

18650 2S will work much better on 5000KV+ 1303.5 motor.

The Crux3 is a very docile flyer on 1s, if you pick a light battery, like a 500mah or so. Anything heavy like a 18650 will not work.

I've tried with 2s lion samsung vtc6 batteries. The hover amps are around 5-6A. It hovers at around 50 percent throttle. It files for 15+ min. But I can say that it was the most boring flight I've ever done No throttle authority, it is like trying to steer a boulder. I wouldn't recommend.

One problem I have thought is very limited vtx range around 20-30 meters, the quad gets strong static beyond that. Is there a way to remedy this? Thank you.
