Question

Where do you buy aluminum landing gear?

I occasionally am asked where to buy aluminum landing gear. I've told a few people that they could go to the "Parts For RC Kits" section on Sig's website and buy just the landing gear intended for a 4 Star 40 or something. But it would be a lot more convenient to just buy a generic "40 size landing gear" like various suppliers used to sell 20 years ago.

I'm not very knowledgeable on this topic because I have a big box of landing gear from buyout deals I've made over the years, and if I build a plane that I don't have a landing gear for I usually just make something out of wire. Are there any suppliers left who sell aluminum landing gear in various sizes for scratch builders?

Probably not as many sources as in the past or maybe more.
Here is one https://www.tntlandinggear.com/
I think the best source for LGs and many other accessories for scratch builders are ARF replacement parts. Choices like LG (fixed and retracts), cowls, canopies, painted pilots in every scale, hardware etc at some reasonable prices. Of course a lot of parts are only around as long as the ARF is still being sold.

Excellent question! As noted, options these days seem limited. I’ve wondered about using the aluminum stock available from Home Depot, etc. presumably one could bend it in a vise to the desired shape, and cut/drill as required?

I dealt with TNT once, the experience was disappointing. YMMV

A friend of mine bought out a large chunk of the Hobbico warehouse, and ended up with lots of bent aluminum gear (and tons (literally) of other stuff).

I don't know if he still has any, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

You can reach him here: https://www.ebay.com/usr/bumperboards

Tell him I sent you.

I have the DuBro landing gear on several airplanes where the stock gear kept bending too much.

It's excellent, does not bend, and is very strong. I have never broken one. DoBro has many excellent products but Tower Hobbies has decided not to stock many of them.

It looks like DuBro has aluminum landing gear in one size. I looked up Great Planes landing gear, and it's all tagged as unavailable. Wow, times have really changed. I've been thinking about having landing gear made in several sizes by a nearby metal fabricator. I wonder how big of a market there would be for it.

Check my ebay buddy! I bought about 10 sets from him last year of the GP stuff, even though it wasn't available from Tower.

Can you suggest a good source?

I found a carbon fiber gear on the Graves Hobby website. It's 6 inches wide, 3 inches tall, and sells for $8. That's a pretty good deal for a 40 to 60 size landing gear.

https://www.gravesrc.com/pt-model-ca...0g-17-6oz.html

They also have the lone DuBro aluminum gear, plus a couple of Hangar 9 landing gears for very large planes.

That's a great tip, and I appreciate it. Unfortunately he does not list any landing gear currently.

Both Extreme Flight and Pilot RC sell very nice carbon gear in all sizes, I have been buying gear from them for years.

Thanks for the tip. I'll make a note of that, although I still don't see simple bolt-on gear sized for 1/2A to 25 size airplanes.
