Well a bit of a change of plan. I orginally wanted to build this stock before converting to brushless. However with the added weight it looks like the first flight will be brushless. This thread will probably continue with the conversion to brushelss.

The model with be outfitted as follows; HIMAX HA2015-4166 brushless W/6.6:1 offset Gearbox (similar to a GWS C but aluminum) and an ALIGN 10 AMP ESC. 3S1500 LiPo. I don't know what prop size yet. Maybe a 1040 or the stock 9070.

Had the maiden flight this past Sunday at the local park. My Himax 4166 has been lost in the mail so instead of letting the model sit on the shelf I purchased another e-flight 370. Now both my Corsair and Spitfire are using the same power and controller system. To get the CG correct I had to use the full amount of clay that was provided in the kit stuff up into the nose. I may try to find a heavier spinner and remove some of that clay.

The very first flight lasted only about 30 seconds. As I tossed the model the canopy cover popped off and I flew one circut around the park and touched down. The first flight proved the plane could fly. I don't know why the pilot ejected so quickly though . A little tape secured the top hatch down and off she went again.

The model performs very well. I always hand launch and this guy needs a very gentle toss at full throttle to get it going. Barely a noticeable dip as she pulls up into the air. Very cool. Once in the air I drop the throttle down to about 1/2 and I'm moving faster than my Mustang does with the stock GWS brushed system. With full or 3/4 throttle, loops are very easy, and rolls are a blast.

It's faster on landing approach and I'm going to need practice with that. Landing has always been an issue with me and I perfer models that sort of float down. Both the Spitfire and the Corsair come in very fast but then, they're also double the weight of my slow flyers. The model does tend to tip stall at low speeds so you have to touch down at a pretty good clip. My final flight of the night I came in a little slow and a little bit high. The models wing dipped, hit the grass, and it did a bit of a cartwheel from a couple of feet off the ground. There was a small crack down the forward section of the fuselage that I've repaired with 5 minute epoxy. I'm really surprised this happened though. The fibreglassing should have prevented a break like that. Well maybe the fibreglass just prevented the model from shattering like my Mustang always did.

Unforutnately, this isn't something I can easily replicate on my flight sim. Landing on that is easy. When I get into the real world though, it's another story.

Glad you are happy. I love mine, you are right about the speed you have to carry some into landing or it will snap. That wing was well known for that!

But o does that ellipitcal wing look great in the air!

Probably the wrong thread but I've been searching for a while and can't find a reference I saw recently about masking GWS foam with wet paper instead of tape so as not to pull off the previous paint during mask removal. Does anyone know of such a process? If memory serves, wet newsprint was mentioned. This will be used to paint markings on my Spitfire to match the cover photo in a recent magazine (Flight Journal?) I saw at the LHS.

That would work but the paint can soak through depending on how you've thinned your paint. The best advice I can give is to go to a home renovation place and get some low tack masking tape. It's green rather than the off white of the high tack stuff. It doesn't pull off the previous layer of paint from the foam.

The other option is to use some regular masking tape but press it against a cotton shirt a few times until the majority of the adhesive is gone.

And just .01 more cent to add, don't try and think the blue painters tape will work because it doesn't.

Tried it, and had to repaint.

Great work David, definately an awesome looking plane and great tutorial. I'm still wondering what you final weight came in at? If you try another GWS Spit later on, give it a try with the SG kit unglassed and the elongated (Mk IX) nose, covered in other threads. With your power setup you'd be sub 15 oz AUW and all of the bad habits in the air go away. Thanks again for your efforts!

David,

Good job! Your AUW is excellent too. Glad to hear your maiden went well.

I've found that when landing warbirds (and other low wing planes) I really need to fly them in. I just pretend the runway isn't there and fly her down with a little power on and a little nose high. Cut power just after touch down and you'll have a nice three pointer. A smooth landing area helps as nose overs tend to happen if the wheels cannot roll freely.

Howdy one and all


Hello to one and all:

I have read several differing threads about fiberglassing your GWS models and thought I might give it a try. I used 2.0 oz cloth for the Fuselage and .50 oz cloth for the wings and left rudder and elevator alone. I did not have many pics about spits available in the limited time I have ( work many hours a week) so I trusted to my local hobby store for colors. All Colors are canned Tamiya Colors. I used sig Weld diluted with a little water instead of Poly. I just could not find the time to get to the local Lowes and I had the sig on hand. The sig weld penetrated the cloth easily and sticks well to the foam. Dried in no time and gave me a sandable surface to apply color too, but time will tell if it holds up to the test. Now for facts and questions.

I have weighed this bird with Prop and gear and it weighs in at 13.5 oz without battery pack
I am using the stock GWS gear Box With B gear drive
I have a 10/7 prop on her and all GWS reciever and servos
I have left the rudder attached and plan to fly with just Aelerons and Elevator. I have ordered the GWS 1600 Ni Mh pack which should fit.
My questions are this. Has anyone flown this bird with stock motor after glassing? (With battery pack I should come in at around 19.5 oz)
Has anyone flown in this config? (Aeleron Elevator and speed )
Has anyone tried this 1600 ma Ni Mh from GWS in this plane? ( i have ordered this battery pack from GWS and gone off the dim for fit.)
Has anyone found any better Wheels than these? Sheeeeesh!

Did I told you guys to try EPS400C D gear drive with EP1060HD for 2 cells or EP9050 for 3 cells in this thread?

Mr. Lin, the sweet spot for mine is with a Himax 2808-1160 using your 9x7.5 DD prop cut down to 8" on 3s lipo. We need more deep pitch, small diameter props in the DD/HD line. What a great plane your Spit is!

It'll fly with an 8 cell pack, but will be a heavy bird, try to get plenty of altitude before trying anything tricky, keep your aileron and elevator throws to 3/8" or less up or down and be sure your CG is per specs. Aileron and elevator only is how most people fly them without landing gear, you may wish you had rudder for takeoffs on gear but that's about it. I think www.allerc.com has some light foam wheels in a variety of sizes that are narrow enough to fit the stock gear wire. My first Spit was similar to yours in weight with landing gear and rudder and just flew on 2 cell lipo with nose weight to balance. Could tip stall at low speed. Spit #2 with brushless and 3 cell lipo came in at 15 ounces and flies like a champ but slows down to floater speed. No landing gear or rudder though.

Thank you for the help. My local Hobby stoer has lost my battery order so I will have to waite a little while longer. My wheels are not yet hard points as I have not decided to keep them yet. I hope to have this bird up soon. I have never played with brushless or lipos yet as I am budget minded and have already put out the expense for a charger that handles nicd and ni mh. Will keep watching the skies, and thanks again.
