Scratch built P-51 paint ideas

Hello,

A friend of mine built this P-51 for me and now I'm trying to come up with a color scheme. I'm torn between the traditional warbird scheme or a colorful reno racer scheme. I like being different and was wondering if there were any different color schemes that would look great on the Mustang.

I had someone suggest a Russian red or the Roto-Finish reno racer.

Mac8,
Looks very nice! It looks like it is made from pink foam, is it?

Being pedantic, it's an early model Mustang, so it probably cuts your 'racers' options somewhat

Try this

If it were a D model I'd suggest the yellow version that Bob Hoover flew. Since it's a razorback not sure what scale colors apply.

Look for the p-51's that the Israeli Airforce flew in the 50's, real neat scheme.

Guys,

Thanks for all the great ideas. Yes, its made of 2" pink foam and fiberglass with kevlar in the hinges and a few other key areas. The wing was vacuum bagged and is a permanent mount to the fuse. It was built with speed in mind.

Wingspan is 31"
Fuse is 24"
Weight is 7.3oz empty

I considered an Axi 2212/20 as a lightweight power supply or the Mega 16/15/3 as heavier option.

This P-51 is from the Navy recce squadron (yes, Navy) that was loaned to the Army Air Corps in 1944 in Italy. It would make a great sceme and the name is outstanding. This is only the second time this pic has been published--both one ezone.

Here is a sqaudron mate of the Weenie Merchant (the pilot was a real ladies man). It looks like aluminum with olive trim.

Ooops didn't even noticed that she was a P-51B, rather than a D.

Well then, if you are wanting to be different on that side of the pond then doing her up as a RAF Mustang III like this one with invasion stripes should make her stand out from the crowd.
