Rib and scratch build Outboard 1/6 scale
I think its an impossible dream to own an rc model of a boat like this, unless you know different.
I have watched a brilliant video of one made in Greece, but he only made them for friends, they were 1.2m long |

I may be able to help....... just waiting to hear back from a customer.....
I have spoken to a chap that retubes and repairs ribs. The problem is the glue seams need to be min 1.5" and have strengthening strips to have any strength at around 40psi. He recommended just covering solid tubes in hyplon or pvc... However... I'm still not convinced it cant be done in other materials... but the problem with other materials is the adhesive. I build a 34ish" rib but with GRP tubes covered in vinyl. Have also got a bigger experimental rib hull.... |

Real tubes filled with air would be amazing and a world first, this one looks the part but it is a solid GRP mould with painted tubes. Not that I wouldn't buy one if they were for sale. This one has a zenoah petrol engine, he also did a brushless version. Would it need 40 psi ? At a smaller scale does that not mean you can reduce the pressure? With your contacts and skills James I think your the man to crack it. |

Its 40 psi to support the material properly. The pressure overcomes the weight and stiffness of the material....

Italian job
Gommone translated means rubber dinghy , not sure how this one is made, maybe if someone can translate the comments we could be wiser! Nice detail on this one. |

're Italian job
These look great from this distance. I have found out they used those foam swimming aids for the tubes, all credit to them for making it work. But I don't think the finnish is as neat as those made in one grp mould.

French connection
Another swimming noodle version, huge amount of work to get to this, but it runs well on the water. It uses my favourite engine, TFL geared outboard |

Ideas
I have been giving this some thought, and ended up ordering a couple of swimming noodles, only £8 so won't have lost much. I have a roll of fabric vinyl in grey that I bought ages ago, so I spray glued it to some pipe lagging, the result was quite pleasing.
My thoughts for the hull have ended up for now on bonding a sheet of thin ply to a thin sheet of epoxy for the outside. My neighbour has ordered an expensive 3d printer and has offered to make any parts I need, he has the skills to do it from work, great news. Will start posting photos if I make some progress. |

Looks good so far, I guess you have a mould to produce these hulls? The noodles are 65mm diameter which is a nice size to work with, but they won't have that handy slit for pushing onto a sharp edge. I am hoping they will be more flexible than pipe lagging.

Mine are only pushed on for storage purposes. This is only as far as out project got. I'm planning on shaping the tubes so they are tapered and bonded properly to the hull and transom rebate... or better still just using the foam to shape the tube fabric.....

Gala 400 rib
Quite taken with the Gala ribs. This one is only 13 feet, but takes a 40 to 50 hp outboard.

The noodles arrived, but meanwhile a club mate gave me some so I am using them to practice on.
I never set out to do a build log, but my interest has grown , so I will see how far I can get. I am using a scale of 1/7 so the Gala at 13 feet will be just short of 2 feet. Having gone round the houses I am back to thinking the hull will be aluminium which is what the full size uses. |

Doing lots of drawing and mind changing as I make some slow progress. Keep watching videos of the full size to get ideas.
Have had to order some more aluminium so that will slow me down. |
