I spent all morning on glue research, left out one key thing WATER-PROOF! I am pretty sure when gluing decks to hulls you should keep water-proof in mind lol. I got the RX an servos in place, electronics are all hooked up an operational. I float tested hull for battery placement, ha ha it only needs 4 inches of H2o to float. |

Finished Hull
So I've got my newest old boat hull finished up. Radio gear installed an fully operational, deck glued in with white gorilla glue, deck hard ware in place an painted an the vinyl decals in place. Now to source up a new mast, booms, sails, the OEM mast an boon in pictures will not be used. with out further adieu introducing my version of the 1:38 scale Aristo Craft Stars and Stripes 12 meter racing yacht.

In dry dock
So my little project sits, still waiting for me to finish ordering the mast an boom partz plus sails.
In the mean time I must fix a major week link, the rudder. its all plastic. There is sooo much flex an play / sloop , I don't see how this cheep rudder would steer the boat correctly or consistently. The cheep plastic shaft is guaranteed not last long. Tips on how to build a better rudder or stiffen the one I have? 3D print a bunch spares? OEM rudder lol |

Replace with a carbon rod bonded down the length of the rudder blade perhaps?

new working rudder
So I finally have my new improved rudder installed an operational. It turns out the plastic rudder shaft was jest about 4 mm. A 4 mm brass tube fit perfect, not to tight not to loose, 3 mm steel rod fits perfect in side 4 mm brass tube, these were in house in the metal parts bin. lucky me. I purchased a DF65 rudder for 7 bucks an highly modified it. I also temporally installed the factory mast an rigging my way, for quick removal. almost looks like a sail boat now.

Sails are up
So the only thing on this kit crappie er than the rudder was the mast, booms an sails. On the box it claims an aluminum mast, NOT I got some sort of rolled class / fiber tube? almost as flexible as a wet noodle! The OEM sails are not even non rip, nylon or some such thing from late 80's early 90's? I improved them, I installed reinforcing on corners an on edges that were fraying. I also learned to installed the metal grommets to secure sails in place. All this is done jest for fun of it, its not staying for long to be replaced. New goodies are on order an should be in house soon enough. disclaimer: I reserve the right to go back to this crappie OEM mast, rigging an sails. at any time with out notice.

Maiden Voyage
My new little scale cup racer is virgin no more. The sailing gods smiled down upon me an blessed me with the perfect conditions for a tiny little yachts maiden voyage. light an variable was the morning forecast with a soft westerly 3 mph after 12 pm, increasing to 5 mph by 2 pm. I arrived at waters edge at high noon, sometimes I sailed, sometimes I was adrift, be calmed for the first 1/2 hour. From 12:30 on I sailed, and that little Yacht sailed surprisingly well! She's so cute (small) I was having a casual ball all by myself.

That looks like a perfect afternoon of casual sailing, jestdanny. It looks lovely on the water. Whether sailing or flying I thoroughly enjoy the peace and quiet of the solitude.
Just how small is this little boat? It may be big beside my Footys. I spent the afternoon exploring a local marsh and found a lovely backwater with a launching ramp for full size small boats. I'll be taking my new Footy out there soon. Thank you for sharing your successful sail. |

The specks on my new old 1:38 scale 12 meter cup racer are L= 20 inches x W= 4.5 inches x H= 31.5 inches. She has the winged keel, very shallow draft, She only needs 4 inches of water to float / sail. She looks so small next to my Victoria & DF65. I'm sure she would probably look quite big next to a microscopic Footy? |

I love when a plan comes together, even when you didn't have a plan in the first place! It jest fell together ha ha. Sailboat #4, My new / old early 80's little 1:43 (19") scale 12 meter cup racer arrives tomorrow. The new / old 75 MHz AM Rx that matches my new / old Tx that came with the Stars & Stripes arrives the next day, an the day after that the matching crystals needed arrive. I can now use the same vintage radio for both old vintage sailboats.
So now back to the Stars & Stripes after casually sailing her for the second time I think I will leave the original sails up for now , she don't sail so bad with them. How ever I think I shall take up sail making over the winter dry dock season. What would be a good sail material for my small little 19 & 20 inch boats? Light weight ? Something easy for a hack, novice, beginner to work with? |
