Based on the Carbon Cub by CubCrafters, an upgraded and thoroughly modern iteration of the classic Super Cub, and equipped with Horizon Hobby's exclusive and innovative SAFE technology, this scale reproduction makes it possible for almost anyone to learn to fly successfully. And the addition of telemetry-capable and Smart components including an ESC, battery and charger (battery and charger sold separately for the BNF® Basic version), along with the option to add SAFE Plus® GPS-enabled technology and the Landing Assist Sensor (LAS), makes learning to fly even easier than ever before!

Overview

Welcome to the exciting world of RC (Radio Controlled) flight! If you've ever dreamed of taking to the skies, Horizon Hobby has you covered. We are committed to engineering aircraft that you can learn to fly with successfully even if you've never flown RC before. Every HobbyZone® aircraft we offer features industry-leading design and technology developed by experts to keep you in control and learning at your own pace so you can turn your dreams of flight into a reality!

The HobbyZone® Carbon Cub S 2 is the easiest to fly, most capable and versatile scale trainer RC airplane yet! It's equipped with exclusive SAFE® (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology that helps to prevent overcontrol, loss of orientation and crashes so nearly everyone can learn to fly successfully. Beginner, Intermediate and Experienced modes allow you to choose the level of stability and control you need, or are ready to try, at the flip of a switch. And you can instantly return to steady flight using Panic Recovery with the push of a button in any flight mode. Oversized tires make it possible to take off and land on a variety of surfaces including thick grass, gravel paths, dirt trails and smooth pavement, or you can install the optional floats to fly from water—which adds to its unmatched versatility and capabilities.

The Carbon Cub S 2 is equipped with a 30-amp telemetry-capable ESC that provides a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data including motor RPM, current, battery voltage and more to compatible Spektrum™ AirWare™ equipped transmitters, and even approximate flight battery power remaining via multiple LEDs on the DXS transmitter included with the RTF version. The addition of exclusive Spektrum Smart components including a lithium polymer (LiPo) battery and charger make it more convenient to charge properly and safely (battery and charger sold separately for the BNF® Basic version). And you have the option to easily upgrade to SAFE Plus GPS-enabled technology that offers features such as AutoLand and Virtual Fence, along with the option to install the Landing Assist Sensor (LAS) that automatically "flares" for smoother landings, to make learning to fly—and to land safely—easier than ever!

The Ready-To-Fly (RTF) version includes everything needed to fly in one box, and is the perfect choice if you're a new RC pilot. From the Spektrum DXS 2.4GHz transmitter you can use with other Bind-N-Fly® (BNF) and BNF Basic aircraft after you learn to fly the Carbon Cub S 2, to the 3S 2200mAh Smart LiPo battery that delivers long flight times and the convenient S120 USB-C Smart charger that can be used with a variety of USB power sources, there's nothing extra you need to buy or provide! A BNF Basic version is also available for experienced pilots who want to use their favorite Spektrum transmitter along with batteries and chargers they may already own. And for both versions, the powerful and efficient brushless power system including a telemetry-capable ESC, plus the flight controller, receiver and servos, are all factory-installed in the durable EPO airframe that assembles quickly and easily without the need for glue or special tools.

Ready-To-Fly Convenience This Ready-To-Fly (RTF) version includes a Spektrum DXS controller/transmitter equipped with industry-leading DSMX® 2.4GHz technology and everything else you need to fly including AA batteries for the transmitter, a Spektrum Smart rechargeable lithium polymer battery for the airplane and a Smart USB charger. That means there's nothing extra to buy or provide so you can fly! The included transmitter, battery and charger can also be used with other Bind-N-Fly® (BNF) Basic RC aircraft.

Spektrum Smart Battery and Charger (RTF version only) The RTF version includes a Spektrum 3S 2200mAh Smart LiPo battery and an S120 USB-C Smart charger that can be used with a variety of USB power sources. Simply connect the battery to the charger, and the exclusive Smart technology will determine and start charging at the best rate to properly and safely charge the battery automatically.

Bind-N-Fly Completion Level Advantage Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly, and fly!

Telemetry Capable The Carbon Cub S 2 is equipped with an ESC that can provide a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data including motor RPM, current, battery voltage and more to compatible Spektrum AirWare™ equipped transmitters (including the DX6e and 8e, DX6 G2/G3 and 8 G2, the DX9, iX12, iX20 and others) while you fly.

Durable Design Construction with advanced EPO material delivers a lightweight yet durable airframe that's tough enough to handle everyday flying punishment without getting bent out of shape. And in the unfortunate event you damage any airframe parts or components and can't repair them, a full line of replacement parts is readily available.

Easy Assembly The Carbon Cub S 2 arrives mostly factory-assembled with the power system, servos plus the flight controller and receiver installed. All you need to do is finish some quick and easy final assembly, without the use of glue or special tools, and you'll be ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge a battery!

Versatile Gear Options Thick grass, gravel paths, dirt trails; you can fly from these and many other surfaces that are impossible for most models of this size to handle. The robust landing gear is equipped with oversized tires that soak up the bumps of rough surfaces and provide excellent prop clearance. The optional float set (HBZ7390, sold separately) takes just a few minutes to install and all the necessary hardware is included with the aircraft and float set so you can fly from lakes and ponds.

Optional Flaps Functional flaps are an option for improved slow speed handling and even shorter takeoffs and landings. This feature requires a 7+ channel computer transmitter plus a flap servo and a servo extension (sold separately).

Optional Landing Assist Sensor for Smoother Landings The Spektrum Landing Assist Sensor (LAS) is easy to install and provides automatic "flare" control to help inexperienced pilots "grease" landings by minimizing or completely eliminating bouncing (works over many/most surfaces and provides optimum performance when flying over/landing in grass).

Easily Upgrade to SAFE® Plus GPS-Enabled Technology With quick and easy installation of the optional Spektrum GPS Module you can add next-level autonomous guidance features that make it even easier to learn to fly. With SAFE Plus added you get:

AutoLand Activated by simply holding down a button, the advanced AutoLand function puts the airplane on a stabilized approach to land on its own near the GPS initialization point. You can even provide some directional guidance to avoid obstacles or to adjust the approach while letting the system do the rest to execute a safe landing. As your skills progress and you gain more confidence you can take over more of the control inputs, eventually learning to land without any assistance from the automated system at all.

Holding Pattern This very helpful SAFE Plus-exclusive feature essentially allows you to "pause" the flight by putting the airplane into a GPS-guided holding pattern. When activated with the quick press of a button, the airplane will automatically return to a position above the GPS initialization point and circle until the command is cancelled with another quick press of the button. It's a great way to safely hand the controls off to a friend or to regain visual contact if you ever lose sight of the model.

Virtual Fence It's easy to accidentally let an RC airplane fly too far away, but with Virtual Fence, worry no more. It creates an invisible boundary the airplane won't fly past. When the airplane reaches this boundary, it will automatically turn around and fly back toward the GPS initialization point. Then it will "wag" the wings to let you know when you have control again.

Learn to Fly Successfully with SAFE® Technology If this is your first RC airplane, Horizon Hobby-exclusive SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology prevents over-control and crashing while also offering multiple flight modes to deliver more control and capabilities as your skills progress:

Beginner Mode In this flight mode, the airplane has pitch and bank angle limits to prevent over-control that can result in a loss of orientation and crashes. When the control sticks are released, the airplane automatically returns to level flight on its own allowing you to relax and enjoy just 'steering' the airplane through the sky. This flight mode also makes it easier to take off and land.

Intermediate Mode This flight mode allows more freedom in pitch and bank, but still prevents significant over-control and the airplane does not return to level flight on its own. This allows you to make tighter turns and to climb and descend faster as your skills advance.

Experienced Mode In Experienced Mode there are no pitch or bank angle limits so you have complete control! You can even fly inverted (upside down) and perform aerobatic maneuvers including loops, rolls and more.

Panic Recovery If you lose control of the airplane in the Intermediate or Experienced flight modes, simply press the Panic Recovery button or switch to Beginner Mode and release the control sticks. SAFE technology will automatically return the airplane to level flight.

This is not an all-new model of course, but it is a great update to one of the most popular trainer airplanes of the last few years! As many here have heard or read us say quite a bit lately, a number of our most popular/best-selling models need to be updated to include components with the new Spektrum chips (since the old Spektrum chips are no longer in production). One benefit of these updates is we're typically able to add Smart technology AND telemetry!

And in this case, as you can see in the Carbon Cub S 2 and Carbon Cub S+ comparison chart attached to this post, we upgraded the RTF version to include the all-new Spektrum DXS Smart transmitter with telemetry capability and 7-channels, a new flight controller, receiver and 30A ESC that provide real-time telemetry, a 2200mAh 30C Smart battery and USB Smart charger...plus the GPS module to add SAFE Plus technology (to add AutoLand, Virtual Fence and Holding Pattern features), as well as the Landing Assist Sensor (LAS), are now available as separate options!

I love it. I’ve never tried auto land. Does it land better than an experienced pilot? Flair and all?

optional, you have to buy and add on the GPS sensor to give you that ability. The ones i have seen land within 10 feet of where you took off.

I love Cubs, just not sure how i feel about this one yet.

The optional GPS module/unit adds SAFE Plus technology which gives the Holding Pattern, Virtual Fence and AutoLand features. AutoLand is impressive and does land better than some experienced pilots, as you can see from the ~3:41 to 3:58 mark in this video:

https://youtu.be/Wgsq8VQZrG8?t=221

And it does flare a bit, but the GPS (and barometer in the Flight Controller) don't really know/see exactly where the ground is. That's why we also offer the optional Landing Assist Sensor (LAS). That sensor does "see" the ground and flares to make for an even smoother landing...you can see the difference in a landing with and without it from the ~3:59 to 4:17 mark in the video:

https://youtu.be/Wgsq8VQZrG8?t=239

Neither of these options are required so they're sold separately for those who might want to take advantage of the features/functions they offer, and even if they're installed you don't have to use them (you can disable the GPS fully any time, and the LAS is not active when flying in the Experienced mode).

Yeah, But a birdie told me the Clipped wing cub is going away and it looks like I can't get a hatch for it, need a replacement Cub for it. but to be honest the nose on this one and lots of the others just doesn't look right to me.
I was really hoping this weeks plane would be that new FAST!!!! one some guys leaked out about.. need something since they discontinued the F-27

Although we primarily market/offer this as a trainer model, it originally started life as the popular ParkZone Sport Cub S 1.3m. And because it's based on the full-scale Cub it's inherently stable and is a perfect trainer platform, but we also designed it to be an awesome flying scale, sport aerobatic and even STOL capable model. That's why in addition to the RTF version (which includes everything needed to fly and is perfect for first-time pilots!) we also offer a BNF Basic version...and we sell almost as many of both completion levels because a lot of experienced pilots buy the BNFB and use with their own transmitter, battery and charger because the airplane looks great and flies so well. You can see some of its capabilities in the Experienced (AS3X) flight mode from the ~2:40 to 3:03 mark in this video...which shows loops, rolls, inverted and even some knife edge too!

Is this new receiver forward programming compatible?

I use a Sport Cub as a beater and a general fun airplane. I've worn one out and my second one is getting used hard. I might need a replacement in the future.

The Carbon Cub S 2 is equipped with a flight controller (which is why it can work with the optional GPS and LAS) plus a separate serial receiver that do not offer forward programming ability. You really won't need to adjust/program the settings though...in the Experienced mode it will fly just like most AS3X equipped models (and it will fly very similar to the Sport Cub S in the Beginner, Intermediate and Experienced modes!).

Good info to know, I am guessing it will be the same one that is in my Opterra 1.2m it works great as long as you don't decide to turn it around ( it doesn't work improperly installed ) Wonder how i would know that lol Opps.
I guess this cub really might just be geared for newer pilots. Maybe I should look more into the Carbon cub 2.1m

Yes, the optional GPS unit for the Carbon Cub S 2 is the same one used in/offered for the Carbon Cub S +, Apprentice STS and the Opterra 1.2m (SPMA3173: https://www.horizonhobby.com/gps-mod...air-s-spma3173)...and yes, it definitely needs to be installed in the correct direction/orientation to work properly In fact, we recently updated the design of the label on it to help make it easier to tell where the front is so others don't install it in the wrong direction/orientation

And although it's primarily geared toward first-time pilots, we sold a lot of the BNF Basic version Carbon Cub S+ to experienced pilots (which will likely continue with this one too) because it flies so well. The Carbon-Z Cub SS 2.1m is awesome too...it's just in a very different class (of size and price!)!
