Plans for Microblimp AS-12
This is the blimp in my thread ‘World’s Smallest Blimp?’ (https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...mp#post4897989) from many years ago. A few people did ask where they can ‘buy’ one. Well of course you can’t. However, I thought if anyone really wants one, I’ll draw up some plans so you can build it yourself. You will need to be able to build an envelope; I have provided full description of this process in thread ‘Making Mylar Envelopes’ (you will need some practice, it’s not easy first time). You will also need to build flexinol (muscle wire) actuators; Robot Shop sell a Muscle Wire Project Book & Sample Kit that can help you get started. Other than that, normal skills associated with building micro indoor aircraft, such as carbon fibre rod construction covered with thin mylar, and soldering to small PC boards, should suffice.
So go and have fun. Please save this thread for any questions or problems just relating to these plans, and any results of your endeavours. All the best, Alan FilesView all Files in thread

Really good blueprints Alan - thanks for sharing with us!
You mention in the construction procedure the issue of finding or making a suitable adhesive - I've never been able to find a satisfactory one, although I've had some success with specialist two-sided tape. I was interested that you suggest UHU Por but thinning it - I hadn't come across it, but it looks useful, particularly as I'm doing a lot of work in polystyrene now, and bonding polystyrene to metallised film (I have been using a thin coat of expanding polyurethane foam, which seems to work fairly well, but is a bit thick). You suggest thinning the UHU Por with MEK (Butanone) - I'm not sure where to get this from in small quantities in Australia? UHU suggest cleaning up with 'light petrol', by which I presume they mean Shellite or Kerosene, have you ever tried diluting it with with petroleum, or is it necessary to use a plastic solvent like MEK? Thanks again for the detailed plans! |

pegcat, as you are in Melbourne there is no problem. Go to Leffler and Son in West Melbourne (not sure, but I don't think that's in the lockout zone) and buy 12D adhesive and 12D solvent (which is MEK). This is what I used before I discovered UHU Power Stick, now unfortunately unavailable. Thin the adhesive 50% with solvent, and brush it on.
One thing you have to be careful about in cold weather (ie now) is condensation. If you see a white mist forming on the glue as it dries, this is water and it will degrade the joint. Wipe it off and start again. Have a hot air gun in the other hand as you brush on to gently warm and prevent condensation. |

I guess this is the only comprehensive dossier about a DIY blimp on web. Even the silent runner does not come close to it.
