First RC bike

Leaning towards a dirt bike over a road bike... any suggestions?

Is local access to spares still important? I.e. do these things break as often as their four-wheeled brethren? If they do, then I believe we only have one specialist RC bike shop in the country (https://www.holeshothobbies.com.au/)

yes. Dave (holeshot hobbies in Melbourne) is as far as I know the only RC bike shop in Australia but is very knowledgeable and very helpful. He also races on-road RC bikes so is very up to date with latest happenings in the RC bike scene.
I had an off-road for a while but as I wanted to race (which they don't do with off-road) I sold it and focused more on on-road so I am unable to give any valid suggestions there. As far as breaking things, well on-road dont break too often unless you have a rediculous motor in them and hit something hard.
Off-road dont generally go as fast but if you do BIG jumps then you may have an issue. I used to launch my ARX off 6-8foot jumps and I dont recall ever breaking it from that. More so if I ran into a gutter and the likes.
