2020 BAM Official Announcement!

We, the Albuquerque Soaring Association, could not NOT do this: the 2020 Buzz Averill Memorial F5J contest is on and scheduled for 22-23 August.

We are indeed betting on continual improvement if the COVID19 situation here in the South West. If things go South, so will the contest. But we have made some changes in our initial planning, and we can cancel (if necessary) pretty late. Final GO/NO-GO will be Monday, August 17.

The venue was supposed to be at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park, but conditions there as a result of the COVID19 make this impossible. So, we will fly at the Evergreen Turf Ranch, South of Moriarty, New Mexico.

And... Here we go:

2020 Buzz Averill Memorial F5J Electric Soaring Contest.
Evergreen Turf Ranch, MacIntosh, New Mexico
34.883 North Latitude; 106.030 West Longitude
22-23 August, 2020
Normal FAI rules for F5J apply. Any exceptions will be announced before the contest dates.
Normal AMA rules and safety provisions apply (including the need for AMA membership).
New Mexico State rules for social distancing apply (2-meter spacing, masks unless separated).

We are trying to put this on the F5J Tour.

We will have registration up very shortly on our club web page: Please visit our web site, which includes provisions for PayPal. And, by the way, because we will not be renting the Balloon Fiesta Park, the contest fee will be only $40.

We will have a porta-potty on site, along with plenty of cold drinks both days. Lunch will be the best that Subway can provide. There are at least five (5) reasonable motels in Moriarty, less than ten miles away. Our favorite is the Sunset Motel: authentic fifties decor and ambience. It is also close to the Sierra Blanca Brewery, which is not half bad. We figure to send an expedition Saturday night to Edgewood for pizza, and have dinner in the piazza at the Sunset.

We are really, REALLY putting on the BAM this year.

But: with changes.

The Governor of New Mexico, viewing with alarm recent trends in the pandemic, has laid on additional restrictions to travel. A purely local contest is no longer a smart thing to do, but is in fact pretty dumb. We aren't dumb (at least, we try not to be!). So....

The 2020 BAM is till on -- as a Postal Contest!

Dates are the same: 22-23 August. We will fly as many rounds as we can stand.
We will be waiving all entry fees. Those who may already had paid, will get full refunds.
We are working on a means to conduct remote scoring for all participants.
We encourage as many to participate as can fly on those days.
Trophies will be awarded: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, furthest participant, best woody.
You gotta fly both days to win.

Stand by for better details and smarter planning.

Yours, Greg McGill

BAM 2020 Update

Greg and I regret to inform the F5J community that, due to recent COVID-19 restrictions in NM, we will be restricting attendance at the 2020 BAM to New Mexico residents only, or to those who are willing to quarantine themselves in the state for 14 days, per the NM Governor's orders. The good news is that we will be we also be including out-of-staters in a 'postal' format which is to be determined. The registration fee will be waived. How this would play in the F5J tour standings is TBD, but at least there would be some healthy competition and bragging rights against us chile eaters.

We have taken down the registration web site, but will announce the postal rules soon.

So stay tuned, and stay safe!!

Regards, Richard the Registrar
