2.5M Foamy ASW-17 from FMS

If you are looking for an inexpensive scale foam electric sailplane, then check out the FMS ASW-17 sold by Horizon Hobby. The Price is $269.99 on pre-order with shipments expected in about a month. For that money, you get the airframe, pre-installed servos and the motor and ESC. The motor is the Predator 3541-750kv with a Hobbywing 40A ESC. You'll need to provide your own receiver and a 4S 22000-2600mAH lipo battery.

The FMS ASW-17 features a two-piece wing, functional flaps, durable EPO construction, folding prop and no-glue assembly. The wings and stabilizers are designed to snap-in place for easy assembly. It takes less than 3 minutes to get it put together. To stiffen up the wings they have carbon spars inside so feel free to pull some loops. There's an aluminum spar joiner that hold the dihedral at the same angle as the full size glider. It's a nice looking plane at an affordable price.

  • Wing Area: 779.5 sq in (50.3 sq dm)
  • Wing Loading: 0.09 oz sq/in (45.7 g sq/dm)

Mesa AZ, it's a dry heat!

Error

The stated wing loading is wrong, obviously. it should be 15.37 oz/sq.ft ( quick way to translate g/sqM to oz/sqtf is to divide by 3).

Still a little too heavy for thermal soaring I think.

It will probably be good as a slope soarer with a motor "save" feature!

Why can someone not produce a foam floater with a wing loading in single digits?

Just a thought.

About 1.5 lbs heavier than an MPX Cularis, which is similar size. Bit chunky, but may do well on the slope. Good to see new releases at least.

Or you could just buy a volantex ASW28, same size, less than half the price and looks nicer in my opinion....

They are both a waste of time, the Volantex 28 has ANHEDRAL which is bizarre, and the FMS 17 is way too small to thermal, high wing loading at 100 inches? Why bother. Buy a Radian.

The ASW-28 does not have anhedral. It has a straight wing which flexes in flight giving dihedral. Radian is overpriced and discontinued.
Its all down to personal preference I suppose.

Just bought a Volantex ASW-28, somehow I got hooked on gliders recently. This will be #4 in the hangar

This new ASW-17 looks nice but knowing HH it will cost at least double what I just paid.
Plus FMS really ticked me off after purchasing the 64mm F-18 and getting zero customer support when I had issues with it.

That's typical of my experience of HH - double the price of anywhere else and zero customer support.

Nice sailplane, but it's far from being a scale plane !

This looks like a great value for a sport flyer interested in gliders. It's certainly not for the purist. But foam would not, in the first place, likely be considered by a purist to begin with.

I'd be interested in flying this and also the 3M Fox. This looks like it would be a great all around model for a sailplane enthusiast / slope pilot / sport pilot. All in once fun flyer capable of flying when the lift is just so-so or the slopes are dead or the club field is not hopping with fast sport /jet / pattern action.

The ASW-17 may fly well, but with such a high wing loading it would be hard pressed for any decent duration. The defunct Radian or Calypso V2 are among the the best foam gliders ever produced.

IMHO, the best performing value for an ARF e-glider is still the Vista BL from TH, $130. Yes, it's a 2 meter RET and does require a pair of servos, an RX and an 1800 3s battery. It's NOT foam, which for a glider I consider is generally a good thing, but it sure IS a true sailplane that will float and thermal quite well with 8oz or less wing loading. YMMV.

Wondering seeing the Chocofly logo. So ist this FMS plane in fact a semiscale copy of a scale model?
