3" x 2' x 8' Foamular 250

Well,

Here I go again, guys. In my quest for materials for my building obsession, I've found what I've been looking for. But, as always, there is a catch...

I've found a place that sells 3" thick sheets of pink Owens Corning Foamular 250 here in the South Bay area. Of course, they don't have it in stock. They can bring it in from another store out of state, but want to know how many sheets we are interested in getting here. Maybe, if there is enough interest, they could get a "unit" which is 64 sheets, and we'd have a source here in SoCal. The location I'm dealing with is Paramount, near North Long Beach.
The sheets list for $20.80 each, but if we get them trucked in, they may have to charge a freight fee, of unknown amount.

The reason I'm interested in the 3" thickness, is that I can get both wing halves out of the single thickness of the foam block, placed back to back.
Some PSS cores you can do this with 2", but the foam beds start getting REALLY thin, and if the wing chord happens to be bigger than about 8" at the root, you can pretty much forget about it.

Anyone interested in a few sheets? I'll start a list, and report my findings to the foam supplier.

Thanks,
Target

Ok Rick and Rich for 2 each.
I'm going to try to get this set up to where every one just picks there's up at the store in Paramount, which is open 1/2 day on Saturdays.
The aim is to get a distributor to carry some on hand, rather than just list it in their website/catalog, then tell you on the phone, "If you want to special order 64 sheets, I can get it for you."
I'll put you guts on the list.

I know that the industiral supply store WhiteCap also supplies this foam. They have the same problem. You must order a boatload before the will stock it. Too bad Owens won't supply it to SoCal.

Hey Target

I don't remember the exact cost per, but have you considered Spyder Foam? 24" x 96" x a little over 5" thick. Might be even 5-1/2", my is up in the rafters can't get to it very easy. Foam Sales in Burbank.

You can buy one sheet or get a deal on a mess of it.

Hi, Dan.
Who'd it go yesterday? Did you guys MoM the biggies at Parker??

Anyway, I don't have any experience with the spyder foam. I have cut some Hi-Load 60, and I had some problems with ripples in the LE with that density of foam. I assume that the spyder foam is the same density. Also, I seem to remeber that it was more expensive thatn the Foamular 250.
For PSS, and sport planes, I believe the F-250 is fine for our needs.

Ripples are pretty much as wire tension, speed or heat combo problem, not the foam itself unless you got a bad batch. Had a load of 1.9 EPP with wood spliters in it, that was fun.

I didn't go to the MOM, spent some time with my Son yesterday.

Everything you might want to know about foam from Dr. Drela

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Allegr...s/Skin_Stress/

From the table you can see that the properties of Spyder and Hi-Load
60 are extremely direction-dependent. The transverse stiffness (E33)
is 5-6 times larger than the lengthwise stiffness (E11). Pink foam,
on the other hand, is more uniform in all directions.

Well,
It's not looking good....
The distributer wants a $150.00 charge to truck the sheets in from Oregon. That would add about $6.00 per sheet, if everyone paid for the sheets that said they would.
That's $26.80 per sheet....
For that price, there is a place that has 3" x 4' x 8' sheets in stock for $53.00, altough I prefer the 2' wide sheets, for storage convenience.

I'll keep checking into options; I'm not really understanding why these places show a product in their online catalog, but they are really Special Order...

Target -- go with the Spyder foam--stuff's really dense -- sands like butter for plugs etc-- and makes the BEST strong bagged wings! IMHO-- I'd cut all my cores with it if I wanted good compression strength and adhesion with epoxy. FWIW

Terminator-
Your next in the cue.

Timmig-
I might end up doing that, but I think it comes in thicker blocks, that I'd have to rip down to the right thickness. And I remember it being more expensive, I think.
